I have noticed recently that my gauges seem to act funny when the bass hits. My SES light will dim, speedometer will fluctuate, stuff like that. My xenons do not dim. I am using a $60 Autozone battery that is 2 years old. My setup is 1200W RMS to a pair of Diamonds. No cap. 2 gauge wire. Should I look at getting an Optima battery? What about the Sears Platinum P2? The sears battery is 930CCA and has 135 minutes reserve time.

IMO, Optima quality has gone downhill since they switched manufacturers. They're now being made in Mexico, I believe. Sears Diehard batteries, at least the top of the line ones, is an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery just like the Optima, and is one of the best batteries you can buy, again IMO.

Do you have a full system to have matched mids and highs? That must sound horrible when the bass hits if you dont. I have a full system and subs. My total is about 850rms for it all, my headunit goes up to 40, i never took it past 26 because you cant sit in the car. Normally listen on 10-14 and thats pretty loud.

Yeah that much rms is definetly gonna cause problems, even with mine my lights slighty dim but its not noticeable. Rear lights that is at night.

im pushing 2000rms on 2 15s in the back and i have a second battery and it still has a little voltage drop. I am gonna do the bigg three in a few months when its warmer but i have heard a lot of negatives about caps. i may upgrade the second battry to a kinetic 600 watt because that from what i hear can handle more thab 2500 watts.

Your Alternator is only a 60 to 90 AMPS maybe a 100 AMP, so if you will be pushing 1200Watts then you need to upgrade to a 140, 160, 190 AMP alternator and a good high end battery :dblthumb:

R50s with the VQ35DE alternator have a nominal rating of 110A. R50s with the VG33E have a nominal rating of 90A.

Yeah I also have an amp running to Diamond D6 speakers in the doors. Realistically probably only pushing 1000-1100RMS on the subs plus a couple hundred extra watts for the door speakers. I think I might go with the Platinum P2 battery and see about the big three mod. If I did get a bigger alternator where is the best place to go?

Rugged Rocks makes high-output alternators for WD21s & R51s, but not for R50s. Shoot an e-mail to [email protected] to see if there are any plans for a high output R50 alternator.

How do you know if you have a R50 or R51 and what is that means?
Oh and by the way, our QX4 has a 100 Amp alternator.

The alternator is rated at 110 amps (around 2500 rpm) and 60 amps at idle.

How much is the voltage dropping while playing the music at around peak. If it is below 12 volt - I would be cautious because that could damage the amps.

I would recommend the following:
The big 3 first - this should help with voltage drop
Upgrade your battery - I would skip optima. Go for Kinetic 1600, XS power, SHURiKEN, stinger battery

A 1986.5 Pathfinder??? Not in the US, I don't think so. The first Pathfinders hit the US about September of 1986, which is normal model year change-over time. They were advertised as 1987 models. I bought my first one Dec 31, 1986 about 1130 pm. 30 minutes later and I couldn't have taken the sales tax as an income tax deduction.

You're right. I was copying NPORA's forum sections - they list 1986.5 - 1989 as the "2-door" section. That probably includes 1986.5 D21 Hardbodies. Courtesy Parts also lists 1987 as the beginning of the Pathfinder, so I'll correct my information thread. :)

It will fit. I had a Kinetik 2400. It fit without a problem.
