Has anyone ever tried this. It would save a lot of space.

Do you mean "mounted" in the hatchcover itself? Running "free air"?

I guess it can be done, but they're probably a bit heavy for mounting in the cover, and then running them "free air" will make them sound like crap.

You'd be better off with one small sub in a tiny enclosure.

if you mean thecarpeted board that is attached to the hatch that goes up and down, (not an audio guy) then thats what I did, I have 6X9's in there and a 50x4 stereo and its sounds great, even bassy...created its own sound chamber, but sounds like crapola when the hatch is open

Yes, that "works", but at a compromise. It will save space and give "decent enough" sound, but not strong bass. Over my too many years, I've seen this done, and the ende result is the person wanting more bass and now having a ruined hatch cover .

never though of the fact that I may want more bass later and have annoying holes in my cover...guess Ill have to stick with the 6x9's..but then again, there are 180's everywhere in junkyards and the hatch covers arent desired parts usually so I think I could find a new one

I trashed my hatch cover.Restricted the soudn of my friends 2 12's.They sound waves travel better bouncing off the glass the the cover. If you really want to do it then get an extra cover now.I say just build the box and be done with it.Harder for theives to steal a custom fitted box that took you 20 minutes to squeeze in there. Happened to my friend. They took my amp but couldn't take the subs.

Hmm, that gives me an idea. If the hatch cover restricts sounds from subs, I can make it into a large "speaker grille" with tons of drilled holes or even large cut out holes from it, and possibly even have it reinforced with extra metal on the underside.

I'll probably do just that for the heck of it in by next summer when I intergate a sub into my system.
