I have a 89 with an rb25 in it. Light weight fly, spec 6 puck sprung with a act heavy duty pressure plate and a few extra mods. I installed these subframe collars and realized that the car is making some noises that dont sound good at all. Every time I shift gears there is a loud knock from the back. And when I say knock I mean boom... It use to make this noise sometimes when I shift gears hard but now if does it every time unless I try to even the clucth out nice and smooth. Is this normal?? Is it b/c of the rb with a semi agressive drive train.

I have not jacked it up to check it out but I know for sure that everything is tightened and secure.

Thanks

Are they the aluminum collars? Or Urethane?

I would check to make sure you tightened everything down. That doesn't sounds very safe at all...

Edit: Does not sound safe at all lol

check your diff bushings. Alot of times when you add the spacers, it transfers the movement to the diff. This in turn will make a loud clunking noise with your already worn out diff bushing. Not saying its the problem. Thats just the first thing i would check.

i used a j30 diff. im using the hardware that came with it. everything was tightened with a 475 ft-lb torque impact. If it is the diff bushing what can I do to solve that?? Do they make collars for that as well??

And yes im using the aluminum collars over the factory bushings.

Yea im runing the collars in my car bc my bushings were shot but if its all snugged up on the subframe then like sean@z1 said check your dif bushings and if they are gone/worn out then the way ive rigged mine is a big thick washer on the underside of the ear on the diff. Mine has been like that for a while and hadnt had a bit of problems out of it since i did this

I could not take it anymore so I went out, jacked up the 40 and looked it over. u and sean@Z1 where right. The bushings are completely gone. Im going to make a trip to the local junkyard on monday and see if I can snag some off anouther j30. If not them im going the washer route.

Thanks

ditto, buy the subframe instead. As to your question, it's normal in your situation. (undamped) I have solid bushings on mine, and the clunk is there for sure, a big solid clunk. I can shift smooth and not make the sound however...

when i swapped my j30 diff i downshifted and heard a loud noise. come to find out the diff pulled throught the bushings and fell onto my sway bar...since then i have installed 1/4inch steel plate with spacers to hold it snug. no problems since...

I bought everything I need to get the job done. Ill be doing it sometime this week. It involves 3/4 washers and some 3M windo sealant.

can you explain martin?? The whole 3m windo weld didnt work. Im using some 3/4 washers at the moment but still hearing a slight knock. Almost sounds like my exhaust is hitting something but she is sturdy.

What do you think about this......... hockey puck with washers on the top and bottom of it. Then have those 3 sit sit over top of the diff. Then have the 1/4 inch plate on the bottom with the hole for the bolt to go through. And of coarse a lock washer to hold it all. Here is a pic below.....
