Hi all,

I have a '95 S13 SE with bad rear subframe bushings. Based on the many discussions here about the clunking while shifting, noise over bumps, etc. I'm pretty sure I'll be replacing the bushings in the near future.

But one problem.... My car has lived pretty close to the beach through a lot of its life, and the underside of the car is rusty. The subframe bolts don't appear to have nuts on them, but they have rusted lumps of metal. I'm afraid that I won't be able to get the nuts off, or if I do, there won't be any threads left on the bolt.

So the questions are: The four mounting points have four bolts extending down, right ? Are these threaded studs welded to the body of the car up under the trunk ?Or are these really bolts that are whose bolt head is accessible from inside the trunk? Can I replace these bolts ?

thanks,

Jay

No you don't

but they sell subframe inserts. they slip in where there is slack from old worn stock bushings to help fill some gaps and slop from worn bushing... search for rear subframe collars or inserts or something along that line, a few of our sponsors to the right sell them, just search

I don't think either of you answered his questions. He knows he needs to replace the bushings. The problem is, getting the bolts off that hold on the subframe. And then making sure the studs are still usable.

Do the bolts go all the way though, and are they accessible through the trunk?-I'm not sure. I'm only familiar with S13's.

Can you replace the bolts?-Probably would have to have a new bolt/stud welded up in there. I think I saw where one guy pulled out his old bolt/stud, and welded in a new one. But again, it was for an S13.

You may want to consult a shop and have them do it. That way if they quote you something, and then mess something up.... It's up to them to fix it all. That would be the easiest route, unless you have access to tools, welders, torches, etc.

That's my go at it. Good luck.

Oops I meant a '95 S14 SE.

thanks eazye2000. I think that the first two answerers had seen the usual sub-frame bushing noise question so many times that they didn't read the whole question. Understandable...

I expect that the S13 and S14 are built the same way and that the attachment point is a threaded rod welded to the body. If that's the case then I think I'll be selling the car soon. I think the cost of having a shop do the work is more than the value of the car. Too bad. I

thanks
