Hey all,

I just got my new (new to me) s13 a few weeks ago. It already has 2 jl 10w3 dual 2 ohm subs in the trunk. They're wired parallel in the box and being ran on a 150w amp. I wonder if I should unhook them, is that too underpowered?

I'll be buying a new amp for them sometime. Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't know much about car audio, subs particulary.

Thanks

It really wont make a "big" difference if you run that amp to just one sub. Are the subs in different chambers? If the are, then you could, but if not, and they were just built sharing the same airspace, then no, you shouldnt run just one sub. Getting another amp will be your best option. Whats your price range? Ive been able to find some killer deals for ppl...

They're in separate chambers. I'll just turn em off till I can rewire to just give that power to one sub. I'm not sure about price range. Probably no more than $200 unless there were just something spectacular :D

You wont hurt the subs powering then lower then their RMS...what is their RMS? 2 Dual 2ohm subs can be wired to .5 or 2 or 8ohms...

From what I understand, they need 250w RMS at 2ohm i think apiece to perform at their peak. Although, you can overpower them up to 500w rms apiece but with distortion.

So right now, a 150w amp, some no-name amp, i guess 150w rms is powering both in a parallel setup. Since they're paralleled, I guess that means they're getting 150w @ .5ohm. How would you wire for 8 ohm, would that be better?

Here's the reference info for the subs -> http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoof...N.pdf

Ok, to get 2ohms (is your amp 2ohm stable) you need to wire them like this...

If your amp is not 2ohm stable then wire them like this, for an 8ohm load...

And an amp for 200bux, than is 2ohm stable, and is around 500watts, i suggest the USX 600D @ http://www.thezeb.com for $160, it will push your subs 375x1 @2ohms. This is a D class amp, and will not drain your alt. as bad...

Thanks for the advice! Any idea how long the sale on the amp would last. I will probably end up buying one soon. I don't know much about my current amp...it says GTS150 on it - i think it is a jbl amp but I can't find any info on it. To my understanding, I guess they are wired at 8ohm right now. Could that still hurt the speakers if I run them with my current amp? Thanks

Your current amp wont hurt your subs. And the sale on the USX amps will probally only come down in price since Ive seen new amps from them on the way...
