You can pick up a Passat wagon w/AWD (Snychro?) or an Audi wagon w/Quattro, but I wouldn't recommend either due to the expense of maintaining those cars and some questionable mechanical engineering. Neither do I feel their AWD is really all that great for the winter - I'll go into why some other time, needless to say I've had some poor experiences with Quattro in adverse weather.
A trashed DSM AWD will be a money pit, and again, their AWD really doesn't cut the mustard as far as snow/rough roads go. it's more performance-oriented than terrain-oriented.
Hate to sound like a broken record, but a Scooby is your best all-around choice for a reliable, economical, trustworthy winter vehicle. They are not very expensive, either. Even an old FWD GL-10 stomps easily through snow and slush like a mountain goat, and there are loads of them around for sub-$1000.
