driver's side, just above the oil pan rail and back by where it bolts to the transmission. There should be two machined surfaces with numbers stamped into them, lower should say "RB26" and the upper should be the number you are looking for. There is also a block casting code raised up on I think it's the turbo side center above the pan rail.

you can also tell by the motor itself.

the R32 RB26DETT has black valve covers and front covers, uses a finned ignitor that sits flush with the center cover and uses the old style black plugs like the 300sx (the kind with the metal retainer clip)

the R33 Series 1 motors look pretty much the same, but use the newer 'push-button-to-release' clips on the ignitor and the ignitor attached onto the top of the center cover

the R33 Series 2 doesnt even have a visible ignitor. theres just two black plugs that join together where the ignitor used to be

only way i know to make sure is to take off the oil pump. supposedly there is a stamp on the head (exhaust side, rear near the lift point) that will tell you, but mine didnt have it. some late r32s have the good collar. considering you're probably going to be doing the timing belt and water pump anyway, its only like 1 step deeper than that. i'd just pull it off to look.
