Is there a technical name for the little plastic or metal thingy that surrounds the door handle on the outside of the door of a 240? (1991 fastback in particular, not that that piece should have a different name for any other year, or car...) Would it look too ghetto if that piece were shiny silver or chrome? Has anyone done this? Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? Right now my door handle surround thingy is cherry red like the rest of the car.

usually they are called bezels. In this case the outer door handle bezel.

Bezel? I looked it up on Yahoo (my bad...) and I only saw everything under the sun except the part about the door handle bezel. Instrument panel bezels, headlight bezels, lots of stuff. I think that's the right word though. Thanks!

You can try 'trim' too....most of the time though they are not available separately for the outer door. Many times it's actually part of the handle assembly.

It'd look like a Q45, which has chrome door handle surrounds.

Only question is, is it metal or plastic?

I think the stock one is plastic, I'm looking for a chrome or aluminum one. Actually anything shiny...
