stupid question but how do you do a coolant flush?

what i did before (on my mercedes) was drain the radiator,put the radiator cleaning stuff to the radiator and fill the rest with water, run the engine till it get hot, drain the radiator fill it with coolant. but i also saw on you tube and some other places you have to cut the hose in half and install some kind of T connector. so which is the correct way. and how often do you have to do a radiator flush
