sorry guys, i been searching through the old threads and i notice alot of topic about the timing chain guide and how it is a pain to hear the clicking noise, but there is one (stupid) question that haven't been asked...

wat if... i don't repair it and just leave it clicking* like that? i'm a bit low on $$$ right now so i won't be able to fix it for awhile and i was wonder what would happen in the long run if i don't fix it...

i've notice the old owner has taken off the top guide out but it still clicking...

motor go boom

bent valves and junk

seen it happen

but my KA-T has had a death rattle for a year and i beat the piss out of it you should be good for a little bit

sorry let me elaborate on that

what happens is the guides were out and the chain slaps eventually it breaks because of the play in the chain and the motor is interferance so the valves and the pistons collide messy stuff

Search for the write up, its on here somewhere. and second, you can take them off with out it costing you money. take off the valve cover, take the two screws off the top, take it off, put the cover back on. and the lower one is easy too. its not rocket science.

I'd bet that it's just the top chain guide.

Your only cost would be a new valve cover gasket set. Shouldn't cost you more than $20 and that's a heck of a lot better than replacing valvetrain components.

Pull your valve cover and remove the top timing chain guide. If that doesn't take care of it, you're looking at a lot more in-depth repair. Either a timing chain job or a rebuild... rebuild is more expensive.

you can get a kit from you local parts store

get a chain, gears, guides, tensioner, and oil pump (build into the lower cover) i have done chains on FWD KAs were i did the work and it still made noise cuz the oil pump was shot

now ive only done FWD KAs so far but the cover gaskets are just RTV but get the grey RTV it is Nissan approved. you will need a valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket (if it needs to be removed and if its not RTV, again ive only done FWD ones)

i warn you THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE REPAIR, you are doin major engine work.if your chain timing is off you will damage the motor

i have gone to take the cam gears off with a air gun, my helper lost the grip on the holding wrench on the cam, spun the cam and because the piston was at TDC it bent the valves. lock tight and torque everything. triple check your timing marks befor you install the chain. you cant test start till most of the motor is back together because of the oil pump.

good luck

if i am wrong anywere please feel free to correct me ive only done FWD KAs i have yet to take mine apart but i believe it is very close if not the same

Whoa slow down boys. If the previous owner only removed the top guide, the upper side one might be the problem. I was amazed how much noise that side one was causing after I removed mine. Nissan didnt even use the guides in the later KA's, if that side one is still on the upper chain, get it out of there first before you go apeschit replacing a bunch of stuff that may not need replacing. Its a one hour job if you know what you are doing, two hours if you dont.

sorry guys i'm a idiot, i just got mine done today... and... i guess my eyes decieved me there was actually a guide on the top and on the lower chain... it cost me $80.00 bucks to do it. man am i relieved to get it done, now its sounds soooo nice and clear.

the guide in my KA24DE wasn't that severe tho, i guess the old owner thought it was gonna die out on him so he just sold it to me for cheap.

i'll post some picture tomorrow.

Ive got another stupid question, I hear a rattle @ 900, 1900, and 2900 RPM

I lifted up the car and it sounded like is coming from the exhaust, but is it reallt the timing chain?
