How efficient is the dummy light on the cluster for oil pressure?

Yesterday it came on right as I was parking to go fishing, so I got kinda freaked out.(Long story...crazy amounts of money and time..Incompetent shop & companies they go through)..Fished for a while, got back in to go home and the light was still on..so I drove maybe 50 feet...stopped, turned the car off and checked the oil level and looked around for any signs of a leak or oil anywhere...nothin'....start her back up and poked around some more to check for leaks..still nothin'...I get back in the car and start to ease it home..maybe another 100 feet later the light shuts off...I'm confused now but kinda brush it off..Got in my car this morning and the light was off...drove to work (like 10 miles)...When I go to leave the damn light is back on....

I don't have any oil pressure gauges or anything of the sort so unless theres a trick anyone knows I guess I'll have to wait till pay day to take it to a shop (needs the 500 miles oil change..new motor)

wow...that turned into a damn story

Thanks everyone

check the connection to it(its on the intake manifold side, right next to the oil filter)

oil light should turn on if you have less than 5 psi running through it, and if you ran the car with the light on and its connected right, you would get rod knock.

I checked the connection and it seems to be fine..made sure it was all the way in and what not..I noticed that there was some electrical tape on the wire not even 2 inches from the connection (on the motor)..So I assume the wire was cut or something of that sort..I don't have any electrical tape or anything so I'm not even gonna bother unwrapping it at the moment...I don't hear any rod knock..But then again I'm not positive what it would sound like..If there is..it isn't loud at all..I figured it was the lifters tapping (I assume..I don't know too much about motors) but I guess I'll assume the worst and hope for the best..Thanks for the quick reply
