So when I bought my '98 QX4, the owners couldn't find what they did with the key fobs. They gave me like 700 spare keys, but they couldn't find any of the fobs.

So I finally bought one off of e-bay when I decided I wasn't going to trade it in at the end of this summer. It arrived today, and I was programming it. I put it in and out 7 times, everything seemed to work, everything was going great, except I accidentally pressed the 'unlock' instead of the 'lock' button in the programming sequence, and then I was screwed. I tried reprogramming it, but I can't even get the parking lights to flash putting it in and out 7 times in 10 seconds like you are supposed to. I even tried some of my other spare keys, and disconnecting and reconnecting (and taking out and replacing) the battery on the truck (and remote).

So the last thing I'm going to try is to buy a new battery for the remote, perhaps it was next to dead. After that, I have NOOO idea and in that case, should I start going after the ebay-er that sold me the remote?

uh are u rtemembering to lock and unlock the doors using the power door switch? since u didnt mention it, here are the full instructions. its IMPERATIVE That you lock the power door locks in the beginning, and UNLOCK them at the end, using the power door lock button (the one that does all the doors at once), not on the lock itself!!! If you skip these steps it will not work!

1. Close and lock all doors with the driver's side power lock/unlock switch.2. Insert key into ignition and remove it from the ignition key cylinder at least six times within 10 seconds. ( Withdraw key completely from ignition cylinder each time ) . If this procedure is performed too fast, system will not enter programming mode.3. Insert key into the ignition cylinder and turn to the ACC position.4. Within 5 seconds, push the lock button on the keyless remote. Your Hazard Lamps should flash. ( Do not press the button more than one time in the above step). If the button is pressed more than one time, the programming procedure will not be successful.5. If there are any remaining remotes (including the old ones), unlock then lock all doors using the driver's side power lock/unlock switch and within 5 seconds, push ANY button on the next remote. Your Hazard Lamps should flash. Repeat this step for each keyless remote (including any existing keyless remotes).6. Turn the key to the OFF position, remove keys from the ignition, unlock doors using the driver's side power lock/unlock switch and open the driver side door.

The problem is happening somewhere around 5-6 here.

Not to mention, in order to get my truck to enter programming mode I actually have to disconnect and reconnect the battery again, it's just frigging frustrating. Here's what I'm doing.

1. lock the doors using the central lock (driver's side) switch.

2. Enter and remove the key 6 times in 10 seconds, hazard lamps flash

3. turn to ACC position and press lock button; hazard lamps flash

4. turn keys to off position, remove keys, unlock doors using central button

(at this point the hazards DONT flash, this is supposed to be where the sequence is finished)

then the fob doesn't work

then if I don't disconnect and reconnect my battery, the truck won't enter programming mode again.

since i reprogrammed mine last week, i forgot i had a spare remote! So the spare remote wasnt working right now. I went out to my QX4, did the procedure and now i programmed both remotes. It took me 2 tries this time (first try i inserted key 6 times and it didnt flash) but now they are both programmed and working fine it doesnt flash at the end like you were expecting.

so if youre doing it right, and its not keeping it in memory... then i dont know man! is it a factory nissan remote or aftermarket??

Okay so I've tried both

-unlocking the doors then taking the keys out

-turning it off, taking the keys out then unlocking and opening the doors

niether work. The system won't finish programming the fob.

Just curious, the fact that it has a phantom remote starter (remote starter is there and this was ANOTHER remote the previous owners couldn't find) might be disrupting the programming sequence?

this is a factory remote, was from a wrecked QX4, same year.

Okay, so it doesn't flash. But the remote still doesn't unlock or lock the doors either way I try.

I'm wondering if the remote is faulty, there's something interfering with it, or the truck is broken.

So...after you press the lock button and it flashes, did you turn it off, take the keys out and unlock it

or did you unlock it, then turn it off, and take the keys out?

After i press the lock button and it flashes, I turn it to off pull key out press unlock

but it sounds like you did that and it didnt work..... it should be a fairly simple procedure and i really dont know whats happening!! Maybe the remote starter is interfering... remote start would have to bypass the infiniti transponder key security system... i dont see how that would have any effect on the remote but then again, i have no idea how the nissan keyfob/transponder key system works. I know how to program it, but i also took it apart once to see what it looks like and its nothing but electronics....

in fact, right now i have a problem where my remote will unlock the drivers door but not the rest. (but it will lock all of them) But i suspect it is due to some broken electronic components in the drivers side door, from a break-in attempt. Like i said, i tried to figure that system out and have no idea how it works

good luck dude !! sounds like you have a real annoying problem!!

Just curious fueler, where is the CPU for transponder reception, etc on the truck?

At least if I can find that I might be able to find the manufacturer or installer of the remote car system and maybe might be able to give them a call and maybe they can help me out.

Note: once this is all finished I'll make sure I write up a descriptive tech report should this ever happen to someone else ever again.

The choice of banner ads seems sooo appropriate!

It was still up there when I looked at it.

I'm gonna assume that ads by google looks for key words in what you're talking about and displays an appropriate ad based on that like

'key'

'fob'

'doesn't work'

'stupid piece of sh*t'

etc.
