Well, failed smog for the 11th time today. Here's my smog results...keep in mind this is with a brand new catalytic converter, stock everything, perfect timing, etc.

I'm assuming that it's that 68ppm of HC that failed you correct?

Have you checked your injectors to see if any are leaking or dripping or not firing the fuel out in a fine mist?

Join the crowd.
I have changed the cat, egr, ecu, bptv, o2 sensor, maf, and my results are still similar to yours.
I go to ref soon for an exemption.
Wish I could be more help. good luck.

You know what's funny, is that my car ALMOST passed (it was like 100 NO too high) when it had a collapsing egr vacuum hose and a bad cat. Maybe this smog shop just sucks? They did my tests in 2nd gear, when I was under the impression it's supposed to be 1st gear @ 2.7k RPM for the 15MPH, and 2nd gear @ 2.7k RPM for the 25MPH.

Ok so you have a working EGR valve. What about the piping that goes from the header to the EGR. Give that a good cleaning. I read online that lean fuel mixtures create hotter combustion levels = high NOx so check o2 sensor, clean maf, run some Lucas fuel injector cleaner. Do whatever.

Oh yeah my smogging guy (I regularly smog all of renewed/purchased cars through him) told me that the cheap smog places will intentionally run your car at less than optimum running levels, however still in correct testing range, to get a normally passable car higher emissions.

The EGR tube is brand new from nissan and does not need to be cleaned, i just bought it. Also the O2 is new as well. MAF is cleaned..i guess ill try the injector cleaner.

So you're saying those bastards try to fail me?!

You can get an exemption and get the tags once. But next time it is do for a smog, it must pass or no tags.
To get and exemption, you must spend over 450 dollars on smog repairs, once you have, then a ref can give you an exemption.
As for the second gear thing, my smog guy said he has to do it that way.

what about the bpt valve and egr solenoid?
how goods the motor, carbon build up will give high nox. at the 15, with your hc,nox, and o2 levels, you could be lookin at a small miss.
fuel soaked crankcase will also give high hc's.
what about the cooling system? your car is running very hot.

I dont know about the BPT Valve or solenoid, but I took it to a shop and they said all emissions were fine but the catalytic converter(which i replaced). This was a while ago.

The motor has new pistons, new rings, new headgasket, new cylinder head, new gaskets.

The cooling system is fine, the temperature never goes above the 1/2 mark. How's my car running hot, it never overheats or has any cooling issues?

You do run the car heavily before you smog, right? What kind of spark plugs you got in there?

How long has it been since you rebuilt the motor? Until it is broken in, it probably won't pass. It'll run rich as hell.

To be effective, you need to add 1 gallon of alcohol / 15 gallons of fuel.

Yep, I do. I drive it on the freeway for about 12 miles, turn around, floor it up the on ramp, downshift on the freeway from 5th to 3rd and floor it to like 80 lol...etc..you get the point, i run it.

It has at least 3000 miles on it.

Anyone notice that his max NO cutoff is in the 500's range? Is the max different depending on the area of california you are in? I live in san francisco, CA and the max NO cutoff was 700's range for the last 2 smog checks that I had, 2005, 2009. Did the state of california lower the acceptable limit of N0 recently for 2010?!?! My last smog was in 2009, and the limit was around 704 for 15mph and 738 for 25 mph.

gotta love loop holes and having your car legally reg in a state that has NO emissions...

It can be totally random and depending on the how long your cars been running until the test. I had a pretest that measured 773 NOx at 15mph, then during the real test the next day it read 1225. This was at the same smog shop.

Also did you inspect all the egr components. There are multiple, such as egr-bpt, egr pipe, bpt-pipe. I failed this morning and your smog numbers are very similar to mine ( i borderline pass the 25 mph NOx though), so maybe we both have the same problem.
