i just picked mine up, now i also picked up a metal hg too, now i planed on just removing the hood for my lazyness, and using a engine hoist to hold the head whil i instal the hg, then lower it, bada bing bada boom ya know? anyway, im looking at thes things and thinking ok? so do you put the littl nut on the bolt then thread the stud into the head? as in, bolt/nut, aply nut to bolt. screw hole piece in together, thus tightening the m both at the same time? i feel stupid for asking but the last thing i wana do is screw somthing as simple as this up.

First off I'm sure that you already knew that you should get the head resurfaced at-least before installing a metal headgasket for sealing purposes. Well onto your stud question, install head first, cover stud threads with the provided lube and hand tighten bolts/studs into the block with an allen. Followed by washers then nuts. Tighten in correct order using 20 lb. increments up to 80 lbs. Lets see what other people have to say. Maybe there is a better way.

Some say ya and some say na. I'm putting together my motor currently and I'm not going to use the copper spray with my 1.3mm Cometic. But some will recommend it, supposively can lead to leaking later on. Have you done any searching? It took me 1 minute to find this zerothread?id=229450 And I'm sure there is all the info you need right on this site, and it saves you from having to ask questions that might seem stupid. I learned this a long time ago and just thought I would pass it on. Good luck to you.

When I looked up the torque specs of the head bolts it said, "See Timing Chain, Installation" and that is where it said to apply liquid gasket.

The S14 SR20DET's service manual says, "Before installing cylinder head gasket, apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket to the mating surface of the cylinder block." Now from the looks of the picture it looks like only on the front cover.

Also, torque is supposed to be 2 steps, 29 ft.lbs and 58 ft.lbs and then it looks like they want you to use an angle wrench to turn all of the bolts 90 to 95 degrees. Says if you don't have an angle wrench you can mark the bolt with paint towards the front of the engine, then turn the bolt clockwise until it is facing the rear.

So much for a simple explanation... Good luck

90-95 degrees is towards the intake manifold not the rear of motor (if the marks made toward the front), thats 180. And the process you are describing is for stock bolts I believe it is slightly different for ARP bolts by their design. If someone knows exactly it would be great if they chimmed in right now.

actualy you stupid d;ck arp studs are differnet then stock! it says to use different tq numbers then the service manuel does slightly, and after searching and building my motor i know its a 3 step process and angle wrench job. so go blow yourself. im just gona put the head on, allen wrench the bolts in by hand, then put the nuts and washers on and tq the proper process. and when you tell people to get the service manuel, dont be an a.ss hat about it ok?
