The Maryville University Democrats had a small gathering a month ago with a public viewing of Fahrenheit 9/11. I dropped an email to administration asking if Republicans or Libertarians -- both parties I am a card-carrying member of -- had any campus groups. Of course, being a mostly female small school, there wasn't, and they suggested starting one.

So, should I? I've asked around, and everyone says all they do is get together once a week, eat pizza, and talk. I suppose I could use it to pad my resume in a few specific situations. I can't imagine gaining much else.

If I do get something together and approved by the student government, I'm thinking about doing an affirmative action bake sale. Otherwise, it doesnt seem like student organizations, whether theyre about politics, race, or a particular major, seem to do much.

Sounds like a great idea. You can just use it as an excuse to get together with people who share your opinions.

I think it's an excellent idea. At the very least it might expose other students to political views that differ from their professors. It's potentially disastrous to have young, easily influenced minds being fed only one side of a story from a bunch of well educated teachers who have lived their entire lives in academia and never set foot into the "real" world. It's great that professors dedicate their lives to teaching and all, but it's hard to take their opinions seriously when they have no practical experience.

This is one of the fundamental differences between democrats and republicans. Dems seem to have a "wouldn't it be nice if..." point of view, where we tend to take a much more pragmatic point of view.

I think a libertarian and/or republican student group would add a much needed contrast to the college atmosphere.

We have KU College Republicans here at my school. I think it's a great idea to start an organization; it will look great on your resume.

I dont see a reason not to. You'll also be the leader since you started it. Good luck.

Im starting to agree with Chingon. I picked up the paperwork at the Student Life office, then read all the regulations, upkeep required, etc. I'd have to draft a constitution, get a treasurer, VP, historian, secretary, charge annual dues, maintain constant contact with student government... all for something I dont see much of a purpose to anyway. If it was a bigger school I'd be more interested.

Maybe its time to try another school.
