For the past couple mornings my 90 Q45 stuck on the 1st gear. If I stop and shift it through all the gears then it will work or if I shut off the engine and restart again. Have any seem this problem before? I notice the car will not do it after it is warm up. Is this a known problem? Any help will be greatly appricated. Thank you.

Tell us about the appearance and smell of the fluid. REsults of the white paper towel test. Transmission maintenance history? ATF cooler?

The fluid smell fine but it look a little watery. The fluid has been replaced about a year ago. I don't know where to find the ATF cooler. Can you tell me how it looks like? Do you think it's running too hot or something? The Q does not stuck in 1st after it's been running for awhile.

There are 2 hardlines running from the transmission to just in front of the power steering pump, at that point it becomes hoses.

Follow the hoses.

If they eventually run into the radiator, the you don't have an aftermarket ATF cooler.

If they run past the radiator into what appears to be a mini radiator, then chances are you have an aftermarket ATF cooler.

Your profile says that your "Q" is a '90, do you have a TCU from a later model?

If not, you are actually in 2nd, not 1st if you are starting off in "D".

If you have the shifter placed in "1" itself and it won't move out of the slot, then I would start questioning the shifter assembly and linkage.

Because it's fine after warm-up, I'd suspect early signs of transmission failure. However, just after my rebuild I've been having a problem with my transmission being perfectly fine from 1-2, but not shifting to 3rd sometimes. We've ruled out anything internal and have figured it's an electrical issue. Most likely the inhibitor switch. However, you might want to search "Turbine Sensor" as well.

Goodbye transmission! A bottle of Lucas might get you a few extra weeks or months out of it.

It has the TCU and a after market cooler. It kick off in 2nd gear but after the first complete stop, it drop down to 1st gear and it will be in 1st gear for a minute then business as usual. Once it start shifting it will work till it cool off. I added half a bottle of ATF and it works better, so according to the dip stick it's over fill and most of the time in the morning it does not stuck. About the same time this start happening, I had replaced 3 injectors. The car is running smooth but is there any chance I might have forgot to connect a plug or something?
