I'm trying to replace my head gaskets but I can't get the past the lower intake plenium. All 8 bolts are off and I have it disconnected from the upper coolant arm and the bracket in the back. I tried wrapping a pry bar in a towel and leveraging it from inside the runners but the thing won't budge. Any suggestions?

An absolute doublechek for missed fasteners. Past that more force but care as well.

4 nuts, 4 bolts, that should be it. I assume you first pulled the plenum, timing belt and covers. The intake should come straight up as the studs in the middle won't allow much twisting. Someone must have slathered it with some sort of gasket sealant. You might have better luck levering it form the front as it needs to move straight up, fomr inside the runners you are twisting against the studs.

I finally got it it off. I put a towel down on the rim of the head where it meets the valve cover and pried over a block of soft wood. I don't think the manifolds been removed in 30 years, even with a pry bar I could barely get off.
