Car: can't afford any

I am working on a friend's '91 Maxima. The speedometer does not work. I replaced the completely dead original with one from a scrap car. The tach works great. Does that rule out the VSS? The speedo read zero until you get into the throttle then it pegs out over 125mph and stays there until you turn the car off or at least park for a minute. I get some kind of movement so I guess the cable is still good. I did have the VSS out before I replaced the original speedo but since I some type of response I would tend to rule the sensor out as well. Any help? Thanks. This board has been a great help. When I get this Maxima put away I can start on my 240SX and get it going like ought to.BarrymanBTW I live in North Georgia, the car has 100k+ miles.

Well, let's try the speedo first since I posted it here. I wonder how I could change the thread title. I'll ask the transmission question after this is resolved. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for the interest.Barry

there is no speedometer cable in these cars..it's all electronic. If you aren't getting any speedometer readings then i would first check the ecu for any codes, I do believe there's a code for the VSS. Most likely this sounds like the speed sensor if you already replace the gauge cluster.

The car will get stuck in park if there's a faulty brake.taillight fuse, faulty neural inhibitor switch. Open the shifter and spray some wd40.

What is a neural inhibitor switch? I'll pull codes and check the fuses, one pair of the rear lights does not work so I'll bet your nailed it. Thank you very much U12!
