This wasn't such a pain as I thought it would be. I ended up going to home depot and getting a 3 pack of 1/8 inch drills, and 3 1/4 drills. I drilled a few holes in the gear with the 1/8 drills close enough together that enlarging them to 1/4 would overlap them and "machine" the gear down close to the shaft in one point. Then I heated the gear some with a torch and sprayed water on it. It broke immediately in the thin spot. I wedged in an allen wrench and opened the crack enough to work the gear off the crank with some pb blaster. Took about thirty minutes, and I already got a new gear for about 45 bucks total.

I only see a hole on one side. If you drilled two holes and tapped them, you can use any timing gear puller to pull the the timing gear off and it won't snap.

I did the same thing, but skipped the heat or lube. Gave it to her hard 'till she broke.

LOL, yeah, this was purchased on ebay, I got the whole swap for about 1000 shipped with the wiring uncut! It was one of those "guaranteed" 40k mile or less motors! Check the head below, you call that 40k miles??!?!? I think it was more like 140k at the least. It's awesome though, as with most other nissan motors I have been through, just about every tolerance in the bottom end is still within factory specs. I could do without boring the cylinders even, but I am tearing this thing down, getting it clean and building it right. I need more money for rods and pistons now. I want a totally forged and balanced bottom end!
