Stubborn Flywheel Bolts! Even used Impact gun

Discuss the RB20, RB25 and RB26 series engines.

Hey guys, Im changing my clutch on my rb20 s13 but I cant seem to get the flywheel bolt out. I got 4 of the 6 bolts out, but the last TWO are very stubborn. They would not budge. I used an impact gun with my compressor set to 120psi. I tried WD40 and put the other bolts back on there, but those 2 bolts will not move at all. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

BIG *** breaker bar ftw, or 1/2 ratchet with a jack handle, use antiseize when you put them back in.

Im doing this myself, so I dont know how Im going to be able to use a breaker bar, that $hit keeps spining. Wish I have a hand to hold the crank pulley.

lol get a socket and long handled wrench or something on the crank pulley, and my sure the handle gets stuck on something when you turn the flywheel to loosen the bolt...or wedge a crow bar from the ground up to a set of gears on hte flyhweel.

First, be sure to soak it with penetrating oil for 15 minutes first. If that doesn't work, then try the following twist to the above procedures:

I put a straight close-ended wrench around one flywheel bolt on the right half (looking at it) and crossed it between two of the flywheel bolts on the left half. Mine was on a motor stand so when I turned the flywheel, the wrench would wedge between the left bolts and one of the motorstand mounting bolts so I could loosen the bolts other than those touching the wrench. I see that you got most of them out, so loosely reinstall a few to be able to do this procedure to get at the ones that are giving you trouble.

Crank pulley + large socket, and wrench with a cheater pipe + floor = engine not crank over.

Easiest way is to put one of the upper transmission bolts back in and wedge a socket between the bolt and teeth of the flywheel. The bolts are probably are probably jammed because of the thread locker. By the way make sure to use some loctite red on those bolts when you reinstall them not antisieze. You don't want those bolts vibrating loose

I agree-NO anti seize. Try putting a little heat on them--your standard propane torch will work. You can use lock-tite just remember to heat the bolts up before you want to take them out again(for the future)

lol you dont need heat... he just needs something to prevent his crank from rotating.... so he can actually break the bolts...

If you put some heat on it. The bolt, flywheel and crank are all going to expand at a different rate. If it is just corrosion then it will loosen it up and if it is lock-tite it will put it into a liquid state.

You have an impact-put some fire to it and zip it off. I have broken a group of stubborn fasteners this way. Use your mellon not your muscle

Yea i like the socket and bolt method, escept i use a dowel pin on the engine, not a bolt. If you do use a bolt be careful of the threads on it of course. Good luck

When I take the gland nut off RX-7's I take a long flat piece of steel and drill two holes corresponding to two of the clutch plate holes that way you have something to leverage against. be CAREFUL using the bolt or stud method--the last thing you want to be doing is removing a broken off bolt--you can make allot more work for yourself that way--use the heat ---your not losing anything but a couple extra minutes.
