Does anyone have any tips for removing the crank pulley on an RB30? The crank pulley bolt came out fine, but the pulley itself does not want to be pulled and would appear to have a much stronger constitution than myself.

i used a steerin wheel puller and the bolt i put in a little to get the center of the pulley a place to anchor it's self. and just turn the bolt on the the pulley and it comes off

Yeah. I used a pulley puller and it doesn't want to move.

what's happening when you say it "doesn't want to come off"? a puller should either break the pulley or pull the pulley off. are you using a claw type one or the T type one with the 2 bolts? try using the T-type puller they're usually easier to center. also make sure to put the crank bolt back in a bit so you have something to center on.

The claw type broke the edge of the pully. The t-type is doing nothing but trying to break the bolts that are holding it down. The pulley has not budged forward at all since I started this.

its probably just seized on there from years of slow rusting. get some shorter, stronger grade bolts for your t-type and try again. if its not centered well you can pull aall day and your puller won't do jack, so make sure its centered on your partially threaded crank bolt good.

I'll give it another shot today after work. I'll also check the package again when I get home, but I am pretty sure they were grade 8 bolts.

I'm sure you're essentially doing the same thing as me, but I take mine off with a gear puller and put a socket ahead of the puller to protect the crank. I think it helps center it too.

I'd soak the pulley in penetrating oil for a night and try again later.

On my old LS1 car the pulley was a pain, trick we used was to get a blow torch and heat the pulley up so it'll expand some. Not sure if it worked or not, but it felt like it was eaiser to get off than doing without it.

Keep the torch away from the crank or you'll be making things worse for ya.

If that doesn't work, a 3-jaw puller should eventually work, like was said, its either going to break the pulley completely apart or bend the bolt. While you turn the bolt, try hitting the pulley with a ball-pein hammer. Light sharp whacks (dont break it) should help break things loose a bit.

And PB blaster works freakin wonders. Good luck

I already tried the 3-jaw puller. It is pretty much useless now as there is nothing left on the pulley for it to grab onto.

Heat is going to be a last resort. I am going to pick up some peanut butter blaster and some new bolts on the way home and give it another go.

I haven't tried a hammer yet, but I did try cussing at it. That didn't work either. I went home at lunch and sprayed some wd-40 on it. Hopefully that will work.

Hopefully the timing belt gear does not turn out to be such a PITA as well.

So in the end some WD-40 and a hammer knocked it right off ?
