Hey guys, the struts are starting to go bad on my 1997 Q45. What are my options for replacements? I want KYB SR Specials if i can find them but I'm having a hell of a time with that. I would much rather like to have aftermarket ones and not stock. Mainly because i want lowering springs and stock shocks can't handle them. Thanks.

http://www.memoryfab.com might still import them, but it will take at least 6 weeks.

I would go with stock, and not lower unless you can find the Eibach springs. Even they will generate camber problems.

Thanks but no stock won't work for me. Just to much body roll and to much wheel gap. Any other sites?

Shocks don't control amount of body roll, they just delay the time constant.

Body roll is the sum of the springs, sway bars, and tires stiffness. In the case of Q you must add subframes and all rubber bushings.

I know it isn't just the struts that control body roll. I'm not trying to make a track car or something. Its a luxury car I'm not trying to make it something it's not. But the lowering springs I'm going to get are a 2 to 3 inch drop and much stiffer and I need struts that work with lowering springs like kyb sr specials.

2-3 inch drop is HUGE.....almost impossible to do and correct for excess camber problems, and certainly greatly increases risk of fractured oil pan if driven on real world roads!

The struts don't control a microinch of body roll period, no ifs or buts about it!But you are correct in that struts must match springs to deliver a decent time constant.

Contrary to popular opinion lowering springs are really not that much stiffer than oem springs especially on front............otherwise there would be no lowering.

Based on amount of lowering.............you just divide the inches of lowering by 8 so 3"/8=~ 37.5% stiffer.

Rebound [expansion] control stiffness is much more critical than compression.

Shocksand struts have next to nothing to do with either behavior.

Mostly affected by springs and anti-sway bars.

Tokico never has supplied shocks nor struts for the FGY33. KYB is the sole supplier.

3" drop will produce more ride and camber problems than can be solved without fabricationg special suspension components.

Goodbye tolerable ride quality.

I'm not worried about it riding like it was stock again. I just dont want my car looking lifted the way it does now with the stock suspension. I'm not worried about resale value or anything like that. It's a 97 q45 worth 6 to 7 thousand bucks, soo i really don't care. Ride quality doesn't matter to me. With good springs and struts it will be just fine.

This is why i hate posting here, i asked where you can find these struts i did not ask for everyones input on ride quality. I've done my research and i know what i want.

Then go get it and don't bother asking for advice here! You know it already, right?

From the beginning i said i want kyb sr specials but having trouble finding them. I wanted help finding them. if not possible what are my other options. I didn't ask about ride quality and what you guys think about lowering the car. Just options for shocks. From the beginning i also said i don't want stock shocks. I mean these are not difficult questions to understand. so just answer the question if you know it and if you don't know then don't answer, don't just tell me a bunch of stuff i didn't even ask.

I have both the KYB and eibach lowering springs that I would be more than happy to sell you as soon as I find some stocks. Let me know if still interested

Just so you know the KYB SR Specials are amazing, so much better then stock. I have the Tein lower springs, sure the camber is off a little but the car handles great, the ride quality if VERY good, my 73 year old dad told me "the car drives like a BMW" when he drove it.

Keep calling MemoryFab, you don't used if you have a source for new.

I guess the streets in cali must be nice and paved cause the streets of ny are pretty bad and the kyb's are like driving on steel post, almost no give at all, yeah the car looked much better as far as the goofy wheel well filled up a bit but in the end I would say they are absolute garbage and wish I would have just gotten the stocks to begin with

I have gotten a few emails since stating I would sell kyb's and eibachs but am currently exploring the option of selling the whole car, I got the kyb's from memory fab and the eibachs from a guy on this site (it was about 2 years ago and dont remember who it was)

It was an absolute pain in the a** to get the kybs first off and have not been at all happy with them, this is just my opinion. I have 245 45 18 and like I said there is almost no give at all, waaaaaayyyy too stiff, took all the luxury ride out of the car and you feel every bit of the road.

I actually went back to the stock springs but that was no help. The car rarely gets driven anymore and it has everything to do with the kybs!!

I got my KYB's a couple weeks ago and Insurance lowering springs. Put it all on and it handles a million times better now. Doesn't feel like the car is just going to roll over when ya take a turn fast, doesn't wonder all over the road at high speeds, and very responsive. Ride is stiffer without a doubt i can't say whether its the springs or struts though. But i love how it is now. I ordered my kyb's from tunerlap.jp just send them an email and they'll get back to ya within a couple days. From the time i sent my payment on paypal i had my kyb's within a week at my door shipped from japan. They'll give u three different shipping methods i went for the middle priced one. For the struts plus shipping at my door within a week which was much quicker then what they had thought, it only cost $630. memoryfab said it could take 4 or 5 weeks and they couldn't even promise me that for sure.
