About 2 weeks ago I paid a shop to compress the spring and to switch out the struts on the spring assembly. After getting home I noticed that the guy had done something to lightly score the piston rod on the strut itself, but I thought nothing of it. So now when I go over bumps or even just push down the rear, I hear a slight whooshing sound and the struts seem to be losing their dampening ability.

My question is, did the scoring most likely cause this? And if so, can I do anything about it?

yep, that shaft goes down into the shock, and there are a series of rubber seals from the body of the shock up against the shaft. basically the score is letting gas to seep past those seals.

that is why you should use boots with the shock when you install, it prevents rocks and such from scoring up the shaft, which will in turn allow gas to escape. (not saying it wouldve helped you in this situation though)

from what i understand from others who have accidentally done similar things to their struts. . .

the scoring on the shaft is indeed breaking the seal needed for the strut to work properly. . . the sad fact is, the strut is pretty much toast. . . unless it's something that you can have re-assembled, i would HIGHLY suggest going back to the shop to have them fix their screw up

Well that's the problem, I paid in cash (it was only like $20 for all 4) and I don't have a receipt. Plus they will probably just say that I did it myself, or the lack of strut boots had something to do with it. But it's definitely something I noticed when I was reinstalling them, I just didn't ask them about. Do I really have something to go with here?
