strut replacement idea...

My front struts are blown and Im getting tired of the crappy ride, but I dont want to pay a small fortune for new ones from Infiniti so I hit the local junk yard. I got a spare strut and went to town on it and this is what I found...








I want your input on whether it is worth my time to call up monroe and order some inserts that are close enough specs so they work in my j30. Let me know what you think!!!!

Ive read they discontinued the J inserts Years ago.
If you find they have one that's compatible you will be a hero !!!

Oh how happy I would be if there was an aftermarket strut for my car! Let us know if they come up w/ anything. I noticed the prices of the OEM struts just went up again on ebay.

my friend shot me the idea of seeing if the 300zx z31 na or tt shared the same shock cartrideges. i never looked into it to see. i know at the local pull a part is like $30 for a strut.

alternative that i am working on is 240sx s14 front 5 lug with abs spindles with s13 coilovers and im swapping to the s14 lower control arm ball joints and tie rod endlinks.

hey wat did you do to remove the bolt that holds in the strut cartridge? i just replaced my front right strut cause it died on me and i ended up using a chisal and a hammer lol whatever works.

I put the strut in a vice clamp and loosened the nut with a really big monkey wrench. did you replace the whole strut or just the insert? for fun, I'm experimenting with the spare strut insert and converting it into an air-ride setup. should have some pics up in a few days.

just the insert cause we acciedently broke the speed sensor bolt on the one we took from the junkyard and then i didnt have to move all the bearings over to the new one. i wish i could have a new one but too much for one. i need to replace my tension rod bushings cause mine are shot and they make a loud clunk noise over bumps. but i have to press them out so its going to be a little difficult.

How did you make out, I need to do both the rear and the fronts, any advice would be appreciated.

The fronts seem to look different than OEM as in no lip at the end of the strut.

And I just got two rears from rockauto for 50ish shipped for a 89 280z.
Bolted right up.
