I have been trying to get new struts for my 91 240sx SE and I have been having prolblems trying to track them down...-for one thing, most people are trying to tell me that I have shocks in the back-I have had both of my 240's rear suspension out now, and KNOW that I have struts:is that true or is it that the more performance-based idea is that you should have shocks in the back? Perhaps its because I have HICAS in my car? Unfortunately, I have not seen any evidence to tell me that I have hicas (no pinstripe on the car it has been repainted) and I have a light on my gauge cluster that is unlabeled;do all of the cars have that or is it just the 240s equipped with HICAS?I would be much abliged if someone could help me out with this little prolblem that I am havingthnx in advance...

BTW-anyone have any reccomendations for an inexpensive strut/spring kit for the 91' 240sx? (perhaps something for less than 100$/strut?!?!)

My hicas-equipped 240 has an indicator light just to the right of the hatch glass window washer/cleaner buttons and hatch glass wiper button.

I believe that 240's w/o hicas just have a black bar there, that looks the exact same but has no indicator light, but I could be mistaken.

BTW I didn't have any problems when I replaced my suspension, I went for coilovers and everything in the rear fit up fine and still works with hicas. When I first researched performance coilovers I was afraid hicas would really limit my choices but it caused me no trouble, for coilovers anyway. I believe all the (SE's at least) s13 240's had macpherson struts in the rear.

watch out though, i have two lights to the right hand side of my sterring wheel. one is washerfluid, and the other is O/D for the Automatic trany ( i know, i know.. ill swap it soon )

anyway, a REALLY Easy way to see if yo got the hicas is to Take a look at the rear assembly and you should see the steering rack.

Look at the rear steering rack or just look at your P/S pump. if the pump has 2 High pressure lines coming out of the top, then you have HICAS(the reservior will also be larger). As far as changing suspension, don't worry about it. Even if it says for non-hicas models it will work. I have KYB AGX's which specifically say "w/out HICAS" and they work just fine. The only difference between HICAS and Non HICAS is the HICAS has rear tie rods instead of rear toe rods to allow the rear to steer.
