Struck me as funny...

Last night on my way home, I got behind a Smart with a Harley Davidson sticker on the back window.

I hate smart cars. The owners around here drive them with a smug look. Dunno what they think is so special.

I'm saving gas....big whoop-t-doo! This is America's distribution center. There are 18 wheelers EVERYWHERE. There is no way I would drive one of those here. Of course they probably say the same about my car. I don't know why, but I really feel safe in my car. Maybe it is that big aluminum bar behind my seats.

Let’s get down to brass tacks here - SMART car owners are like the typical Prius owner with sense of smugness is built around a completely false façade of environmental friendliness. The fact is, a Prius actually causes a larger carbon footprint than most notorious gas guzzlers on the road when it's time to send that toxic battery off to pasture.

Never mind the fact that the gas mileage isn’t even revolutionary. A Jetta TDI gets almost 60mpg and those owners, for some reason, don’t feel the need to remind everyone about it constantly. Maybe it's because they're not douchebags.

The biggest issue here is the fact that the Prius may in fact be the most narcissistic automotive purchase a person can make. Beyond the reasons above, there’s a readout on the dashboard that shows the driver in real-time what their current mpg is.

The problem created here is that it trains people to drive like douchebags at the expense of everyone else around them, taking the most obnoxious aspects of hypermiling and applying them en masse on freeways around the world.

Congrats Toyota, you managed to actually create douchebags.

Yes, I saw on Top Gear that Prius cars do more damage to the environment that good. There are other cars that are more efficient and Smart cars are just junk. They're rated terribly, they're under powered (making for an even less efficient car) and they don't even get very good mileage. I could probably get almost the same mileage with a Corolla or Civic.

Driving an extremely efficient car isn't for me, either. I do recycle my home waste (which I believe in) but Smart cars are just not smart at all.
