Strong Gas Smell inside J30

Hey guys so i know im new around here and i should be reading my manual (which i am) but there's just some things the service manual will not answer whenever i get into my J there is a strong gas smell inside. Now i know the gas tank is behind the right side (passenger backseat) but i dont see a reason why it should smell like this. while im driving the smell often creeps around me. When i turn on my heat it doesnt come through the vent so im thinking maybe problems with the pressure? or maybe a new gas cap? let me know what you guys think; thanks!

You can start by taking the rear panel off in the trunk and see if there is a leak from the tank or the plumbing.

make sure the smell is not coming from the engine bay, it could cause a really big problem if it is, turning on the climate control is not enough proof...... i've seen some shots of engine bays from 300zx on fire because of a fuel leak..... please dont take this lightly

with the engine cold, start it and look in the engine bay, make sure that no hoses are leaking there

is there a big temperature difference between summer and winter where you live ??, if so, then the problem is most likely in the engine bay (one of the fuel rail hoses is most likely loose)

I has a similar situation and it was the two short fuel hoses up at the front under the center cover.

i have the same gas smell in my j and i took it to a mechanic and the top of my tank had a crack in it. its very familiar with the j30s it costed me $311 with parts and labor to fix it. take a look at your tank.

yeah the smell is not comming from the engine bay. I popped the trunk and i removed the panel and the smell is comming from the gas tank it gets really strong there i cant see any cracks but im going to investigate it more. I dont know if this helps but my gas has been going down pretty fast i mean i know this car can be a gas guzzler and all but it seems like i've been losing gas fast. but that could be cause i need my exhaust fixed.. I dont know but this gas smell is giving me headaches out the a** lol.
