Stripped Trans plug!

Just what it says, I decided to change my trans fluid today. I went in and battled with the fill plug for about 45 min. It finally loosened up. Next I went to try and loosen the drain plug. First thing that happened is I round some of the bolt.

It's not fully stripped or "rounded off", there is just enough play, so that I can't really do anything.

Should I just drop the transmission and drain the old fluid thorough fill plug?

Anyone have any Ideas of how to maybe remove the plug and buy a new one somewhere?Any help would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. this is a 1989 240SX, 5spd manual.

The drain plug should accept a 1/2" drive extension or breaker bar. I tried changing mine with a breaker bar and it slipped out a few times, so I gave up. I bought a new plug from Nissan and I figured one day I would drill it out and try and easy out. Before I did that I tried the 1/2" impact wrench. I t came right out first try. So, if you don't have air tools, make friends with someone that does. You wouldn't believe the stuff that comes off with an impact.

But Kudos to you for first loosening the fill plug. Oh, PS, good luck filling the transmission via the fill plug. (ha ha)

Thanks for the reply. I'll have to see if anyone I know has an impact wrench. I bought a pump, so filling shouldn't be that hard, but I think it will be pretty tiring.

Drain plug is a 1/2 drive pice

If you've stripped it out,get another bolt, put the threaded end into the old 1/2 recess, and fill it in with a high strength metal epoxy. Let it set up. Then go back with a wrench that fits the hex head part, and break it loose. (or better yet, if you have a welder, tack weld it).

Then it's up to you, either get a new plug, or use the old one with the expoxied in bolt :D

I must admit that is a solution I had not thought of but will probably use in the future.

I would replace the plug when I got it out, but that is just my opinion.

It's a trick I learned from my 4x4 off road buddies....and I must say, that it works pretty well in a pinch. Ideally, tack welding a bolt in there (again threaded end into the stock plug, so you can use a wrench to take the plug out) works best, but not everyone has a mig in their garage :D
