I have a '90 240. I stripped the head off of the bolt the attaches to the adjustment pulley for the crankshaft belt. I'm in the process of doing a Timing chain job and could use some help. Any suggestions for how to get it off?

to add to that, it's the bolt that is in the center of the pulley, not the one behind it at an angle

there are three belts in the front of the engine bay. One spins the AC compressor, and another spins the alternator. There's a third one that I think is attached to a power steering component? Not sure. I got the other two belts of without a problem. But, the third one wouldn't come off and now the head of the bolt is all rounded off on the edges and I can't get anything to really catch on it. The bolt is on that little adjustment pulley thing. It's cranked down so tight that the bolt that should allow for adjustment doesn't even make a difference. I just need to get it off of there so I can finish up the timing chain job

If there is a sears nearby, they sell specific sockets for rounded off bolts that you can pick up or order. You may have to resort to the machine shop to get this one off if you dont have all the tools that are appropriate.

ok, i think i know what youre saying,

the ka24e has 3 belts, one for the a/c, one for the alternator and waterpump, and one for power steering, which belt is it for?,

if it is for the a/c, i say bite the bullet and cut the belt, live without a/c until you can get it fixed,

if its for the power steering belt, you could do the same as for the a/c, but have you loosened the bracket that bolts to the head by the exhaust manifold? if you havent, loosen it, it doesnt need to be taken all of the way out though,

hopefully it isnt your alenator belt. you could always cut this one too, but dont expect to your car to run again until you get a belt on it obviously, ad get a new tension bolt. but by the sound of it, it doesnt sound like youll be driving for a couple days at least anyway, due to timing chain.

edit - i think youre referring to the a/c belt, if its really that big of a problem, cut the belt and save yourself time.

edit again - you shouldnt have to take any pulleys off to get the belt off, but that doesnt go for timing chain jobs i dont think. which pulley is it?

I'm not trying to take the pulley off. sorry if I said that. I just need to get the belt on. One of the pulley's for each belt is adjustable so you can loosen the tension that's on the belt and easily get it off and then back on. but, you have to loosen the pulley bolt a bit so it will adjust. the bolt won't loosen for s*** and is now stripped out.
