For what i spent at repair shops to seal my tank, could have brought a new one. After passing smoke test(4)th time,I get to DMV and it fails instantly gas smell and all.How much nitrogen do they squirt in there? So the prob seems that the bolts only want to go hand tight, stripped threads. Is there a way to re-thread or use a fatter screw?on my 5th temp tag, they made it clear this will be my last. :ohno:

Time to put the overalls on and go to the junkyard and get yourself a used fuel tank from a junker.....or put your big girl pants on and open your wallet and purchase a brand new tank. If you followed the age old advice given over and over on this forum, you would be prepared to spend a MINIMUM of $3000 after you purchased old multiple owner Q to fix the necessary worn/broken items they all have. Dont have $3000 to rebab old Q ? Sell it now, before it becomes a lawn ornament.

I agree with Qship96 because I have "been there done that".

Hell I have no idea why people buy these cars anymore if they don't have a spare car in there basement or a ton of money.

Hope it works for you!

Did you strip out the tank with the original bolts or did you use longer ones?

You could probably re-tap to a larger screw size but you'd need to enlarge the holes in the sending unit also. Have you used a new o-ring that isn't swelled through all these attempts? As a last resort I suppose you could use RTV adhesive with the oring in place using as many bolts as you can that still thread properly.

Or, you could just move to Texas.

If it ain't leaking raw gasoline on the asphalt, it passes inspection...

Or SC, where we don't have any inspections at all!

Spent a year down Texas back in 08,at first didn't understand why there werent ant black on black cars. After my first week of 100 plus degree days I understood. As far as S.C goes,I liked the idea of a country girl cooking great meals I went and got me one, unfortunately she's not that great of a cook.

Went to the salvage yard over the weekend.Picked up the only fuel tank remaining, for a spare.Got it home and used the oe length screws to test it,stripped...or so I thought.Looking inside the main hole,You will see (2)tabs where the screw holes are that look like a clam opened up,I took a long screw driver and forced them to close up a lill, put screws in and they bit into the metal and seated quite nice.I also tried it with longer screws to the same result. You can see the clam opening as the screw goes through it.So longer ones are ok after all.Save your tanks!!

No inspections here either.. You could easily buy a pass card so the revenuers said "ah forget it" cause chasing shiners was more fun anyway..
