tried changing the Tension control rod bushing. using an impact wrench the bolts were coming off easy. very cool. 3 bolts down, 1 to go.... runnin the thing for like 2 min on last bolt... wont budge... tried it for so long the bolt got stripped...by a proper sized ratchet peice!!!! looking back i shoulda soaked it in penetrating oil... but i didnt think this could happen, well look at me now!!

how should i go about getting the bolt off? i can only put the car on stands, no lift available. i wanna do this my self. its my car! heh, 3 options and i need ur input!

1. get a breaker bar? some sort of tool to get it off? i havent a clue right now. is there an attachment i can buy for the impact wrench that will help me grab it good, or just go and buy some other tool better suited for it? i am not mechanically fluent so go slow.

2. Go to the mechanic and ask him to get one bolt off lol... then ill drive it home and finish it myself. will mechanics let me do that?

3. have the mechanic finish the job. realise what a failure i am at car maintenance. 18 year olds cant work on cars you n00b!

If you do either 2 or 3, best not to let anyone here know! Get your hands on a dremel and cut that bastard off...you need to replace it anyway. You can also use one of the various stripped-bolt removers out there, along with the breaker bar. There are some special sockets that grab onto stripped heads, and stud removers sometimes work too.

It's horizontal then? The dremel is kind of a last resort, but ti works--one way or another. I'd try Sears first...I know they have the stud remover there, but you'll need some clearance for the tool. The stripped head socket I haven't seen there, but ask the sales guys. If you go to a dremel, cut a channel in the head just deep enough to get a large screwdriver blade firmly in there on a ratchet. Don't forget the liquid wrench first.

at junkyards they use chisels and big heavy hammers to remove stripped lug nuts.

I have done this myself several times. If there is room and you can get the chisel to hit the nut at the correct angle then this might be the cheapest and easiest way to remove the nut.

Nils, are you saying that you break it off with the chisel or just notch it for an impact driver or something?

preferably to notch it for an big screw driver and hammer, no need for air tools.

Usually the chisel wont go to deep even if you hit it pretty hard, I've had a couple of tough nuts to remove, many in instantes where harming the stud would create another set of problems... in those cases I only used WD-40, chisel and big hammer. Nuts came off fairly easy with no damage to the stud.

ofcourse I cant guarantee the same success for you since the nut you are trying to remove is different from a lug nut.

good luck.

I like to pound undersize sockets on them and then get em off, or weld a bigger bolt around it and then it comes off NP. When I bought my car it came with one lock-lugnut on each wheel, and I called the guy and he had no idea why they were there... so I broke off the outer shell and welded bigger bolts on top of them, and got an impact wrench to get them off.

First never cut or smash a socket into it. very bad idea. to the desparate it may sound good but its not. What is best is to first spray some white lithium grease on it all around it. The best possible solution you could have is to drill it out. This will not hurt the hub and will give the best results. Take a bit a hair smaller than the nut itself so you dont mess up the threads. Then with a pair of plyers or something remove it. You can go ahead and glue a metal bar in and turn it. Otherwise go ahead and try glueing an old socket to it and use a breaker bar slowly and carefully with a very slight pressure increase with lithium grease being applied every so often. These two things should give the best and safest results for you.

Good luck.:)

umm i cant rmember if this is a screw or nut so im gonna go with the screw....

if its a screw, take a easy out (availabe at any hard ware store) and a drill bit for the easy out...

drill a whole and then put the easy out on the drill motor and put it on low speed and reverse stick it in there and slowly remove it
