car is sohc 240

My car seems to idle at around 2k once in a while, but sometimes I can lift the gas pedal up with my foot and it will go back down. I greased the throttle cable really well but it didnt seem to help. When I stuck my head down under the pedal, I noticed that the cable doesnt push back all the way on its own anymore. It sticks out about one inch, maybe a little more from the pedal when the pedal is left alone. I pulled on the cable right before the throttle body and it pulled the slack out, but is there any way to adjust it? I would hate to have to replace the throttle cable, unless its fairly cheap. How hard would it be to replace this if that turns out to be the problem? I tried to wire the cable up to the pedal to see if it would push the cable in when the pedal snaps back, but its pretty hard to wire them up. SHould I give it another try or is there an adjustment? Thanks for any help

if the cable is sticking it may have gotten kinked at one time and it pinches the cable in the housing. also make sure your adjuster nuts at the end of the cable housing near the throttle body are tight.

i could be wrong but could the spring on the throttle body wear out? that would cause it to not pop up as quick...just an idea..

both of the nuts are tight. is there anyway for my to adjust the cable by twisting the nuts either way in order to pull it tighter? is there anything i can do other than buying a new cable? is that a dealer only part?

yes you adjust the cable by those nuts. loosen them up and adjust the cable so when the throttle plate is fully closed(at operating temp) there is very little slack in the cable between the nuts and the throttle drum. but if your throttle plate is staying open I really dont think your adjustment is your problem. These cables dont screw up often you could probably find one at a wreaker that will be fine,as long as the engine compartment on the car you get it from isnt rusted that is.

sounds like the spring as ride4flame has already stated.
