hi there. i recently bought a 92 hatch with no factory options and i am looking to upgrade the suspension but would like some feedback from others who may have had the same goals as i do.

my car currently is my daily driver (i have an srt4 also but hate it and refuse to drive it) i would like to completely rebuild every aspect of the car eventually. for now though the motor and trans are in good shape and can be left alone for a little bit. i plan to continue to use this car on the street so by no means am i looking to do a full race set up. i wouldn't mind doing some scca events on the weekend but thats not my main goal. i can care less about drifting and do no intend to do it.

i live in north east Pennsylvania and maybe 1 out of 30 roads are in half decent condition. i need to build a set up that can tolerate this and not destroy the rest of my car or my spine.

currently my rear suspension is shot and needs to be replaced. i cannot decide if i would rather a strut and spring set up or just some coilovers. i have no ideas for a strut and spring set up, but as far as coilovers i have been considering megan racing street coilovers.

i can handle something that is going to give me a slight drop in ride height, but by no means do i want this car slammed to the ground. i currently have 15s on the car but would like to put a set of 17x9s on it.

so basically i need to know what are my better options for springs or coilovers. cost wise i do not want to spend much more than 800 on this part.

as far as next step after this i am thinking a full bushing kit and then sway bars. let me know what you guys think.

thanks, tony

If you really want comfort, don't get coilovers or 17" wheels. Nothing says comfort like stock suspension and 60 series tires.

Bad roads shouldn't be a problem. If you're a good driver, and want it really bad... you wouldn't care what the roads are like.

First, I think you should decide intentions for the car. Driving it to BK and work? Some track? Just sit there and look pretty? A.o.T.A?

Once you decide that, you can decide what to purchase in order to excel in the preference chosen.

Get some KYBs and some nice springs. bigger aspect ratio also means better cushioning. If you really mean to race it some, get a separate larger wheel and smaller aspect tire combo for the track.

i didn't buy this car with comfort as my main concern by any means. I am just looking for something better than stock but not a full race set up. yeah, i can avoid most holes, but there is nothing i can do to avoid all the railroad crossings.

what springs, and which kybs i know there are two different kinds correct? one is pretty much a factory replacement i believe... thats not quite what i want.

KYB AGX

Springs should be good at 7 kg front and 5kg rear, but that's just a general idea depending on what you wanna do with it.

(lol fixed)

Do you mean AGX?

Those spring rates are too high for those shocks.

Really, maybe it was 5/3 or 5/4 I was thinking about then. I am sorry if I screwed the pooch on that one.

I do know a few folks who run 5kgs on KYBs for a while now and they seem fine...All I can say is that you gotta buy and try to get a feel for what you like, really.

Maybe it was I one time thing with me. I had KYbs AGX with RSR springs (3-3 rates I think) and they blew within the year. I wrote kyb about rebuilding shocks (which they don't) and they recommended spring rates to match.

I'll look up the email...

kyb wrote:Gabriel,Sorry but there is not a rebuilding service available thorugh KYB. Lowering can influence the life of the unit, but there is really no way for me to give you an estimate with so many variables to take into account. The lowering springs should exceed 1.5 times the oem spec for your car. The units will fail early if too high a rate is used. We also recommend not loweringnthe the car more than 1.3", although 4.42" travel is probably okay for most FL roads. Tim
Sorry. I thought it mention springs rates

This is precisely the route I'd go for a mild and cheap(ish) street setup. Spring/Strut setups are pretty antiquated. I long for the day when I can get rid of mine (see sig below).

There are about six 4 lug wheels that I know of available in 17x9 with good offsets and low prices. Let me know if you want a list of them...

i would suggest the megan streets too if you don't have too much to spend. i've heard they're pretty reasonable when set soft. if you have a lil more to spend look into some stance lx+ coils. i've been reading on these lately and they're supposed to be a pretty good ride for daily driving. i'm gonna pick some up here in a couple of weeks
