strange stalling

Car: 1992 240sx

i have a 1992 240sx hatch 5spd with the ka engine. while i am driving, if i put the clutch in to coast the rpms drop to below 500 and the car starts to stall out or sputters and catches itself. this only happens if i put the clutch in above 3000rpms and the a/c is off. when the a/c is on there is no problem.

does anyone know what might be causing this?
