So, I have had my rb20 in for about 4-5 years now, this is by far the most irritating issue i have had come up. So basically, the car starts up just fine, it will idle about 1100-1200 rpm for about 2 minutes, then the idle starts getting all erratic, blows black smoke out the tailpipe, wont rev past 2k rpm (when it does respond to throttle) and usually ends up dying on its own. now, it will run like that for 4 minutes if i dont shut it off or it dies itself. now the crazy part,.....if i wait like 5-10 minutes, I will start it up, sometimes it is easier to start than others, but when it does, it purrs like a kitten. no smoke, no misses, just runs perfect. So WTF could it be. Here are a couple of clips of my AVCR monitering the madness. The first is the crazy issue, the second is after waiting and starting it up.

the bad

the good

any ideas??

seems like your safc is acting up causing it to flood with gas since the injector duty spikes 100 sometimes. Check for bad connections, especially the mafs wire. Also could be a bad mafs or a the safc itself is finally showing its age.

no, its draw thru. it all coincided with me replacing my valvecovers with a set of painted ones. thought maybe i had a bad ground, but i grounded the igniter to the intake mani. nothing changed. it does this with the 50/50 bov and the oem recirc valve. I just took the car out for a spin, drove great, temp must have hit 180 as my fan did come on. as soon as i got in my garage, the idle just dropped and the car died. I tried starting it back up, and it started running all s***ty again, inj duty cycle bouncing from 3-100 again

did a sensor check on the MAF, ign hot, the maf runs .5 volts, at good idle, it runs at 1.1 appr, as soon as the car starts running crappy, it is only putting out .025v..... on the monitor setting, at idle it runs at .6%afl...when runs like crap, it run at Flat 0% afl. so i am making MAF replacemnt my next step.

clean the maf sensor, maf sensor connector AND the connections the safc has to and from the maf signal wire.see if that helps.
