Been looking to buy this automatic 240. The major problem it has is that it will not go into gear at all (at least, I couldn't get it into gear). You can push in the button and change it to drive or reverse or whatever, but it won't move. No sounds or anything when you do that, either. Did a quick search and didn't see anyone else having a similar problem, so no idea what to check. I haven't checked for codes. I guess my big question is this; is there any way to diagnose this as a mechanical or electrical failure with some other minor testing? If it's a mechanical problem, I have a working used auto transmission I can put in til I get all the stuff for a 5 speed swap. I mentioned the electrical part also because there is some serious corrosion on the battery, which could be an indication that there's a short somewhere which could somehow be effecting it, though I'm not well versed in all things car so I have no idea outside my newbish speculations. Also, this car has been sitting a few months short a year now, so please take that into consideration. If the guy accepts my offer, I'll have the car at my house so I can test more then. Thanks for the :help

Edit: The guy selling it claimed that prior to it's complete failure, it would shift until it warmed up. Figured that might be an important bit of info to include.

Check to make sure it has fluid in it. You can also check to make sure that the cable is actually moving the shifter arm that comes out of the side of the transmission.

The car should go into gear no matter what if it has fluid. It is a hydraulic action that is unaffected by the electronics.

check for brake light operation, if they don't work when you press the brake pedal, check the brakelight fuse, if they do work and the fuse is ok check all the fuses.

If all fuses are ok, with key on engine off and lots of quiet going on press and release the brake pedal 20 times or so if during one of those "pressings" you hear an extra click hold down on the pedal and it should shift. possibly the shift lock solenoid is "sticky" or the shift lock relay is not "putting out" a signal to the solenoid.

I don't have the pics in front of me but most auto trans setups have a bypass system, either a pin you push in or a little lever to pull up on. Take a good look around to see if you can find such a thing, I've never owned an auto nor have I worked on one so thats why I'm not too sure....

you mentionned alot of corrosion around the batt terminals, check and make sure the fuse bos is even getting power....there might be more stuff that does'nt work that you havn't even checked yet.

lemme know....:ylsuper

Sorry, I think you misunderstood and/or I didn't quite explain it correctly. The shifter will move, though it doesn't actually go into gear. It's not jammed or anything, just once you place it in drive or reverse, the car still feels like it's in neutral or park. I can't say for sure, but I seriously doubt the parking brake is still engaged, as we'd have some sort of indication of the engine trying to push the car forward. With that in mind, I'm more inclined to believe that it just isn't shifting for some reason. I'll see if I can't check to make sure the shift linkage is still intact, but from the way he described it failing, I don't think that's the problem. I'll check the fluid and the fuses, and if not those, we'll just swap it out since we have another that works and it'll be easier than scratching our heads wondering what else we could check. That is, unless someone else has an idea :D

BoyWwonder this car you are talking about wouldnt be the one off of Indian river road by centerville trnpk? If it is, the car is missing its drive shaft. I was helping my neighbor find a car for his daughter and we looked at the a 240 last night and the owner told me that it would shift but the car wouldn't engage in gear. I looked under the car while it was running and noticed it was missing the drive shaft. Needless to say the owner look very stupid.

Are you interested in a white 93 240sx convertible? I might be forced to sell mine. I now have 3 kids and I can no longer win the fight with my wife as to why I should keep it. Cant put 5 people in a 240 sx if my other car breaks down. If I loose the fight and if you are interested I can send you all the details. .

Nah, it's down by the courthouse on PA road, across from a transmission place, ironically enough. I am interested in getting it, but I am getting this particular one because it's going to be cheap and an easy fix (hopefully) since we just pulled an engine from SeVa's car (with transmission). That being the case, I don't want to offer you less than what the car is worth, so sadly, I'll have to pass.
