I was sitting in a drive-thru last night for about five minutes or so and my temperature gauge started going up kind of fast. I didn't hear my mechanical fan engaging so I figured it was the fan. The gauge went back down to normal as soon as I started driving around gently and getting some air through the radiator.

well this morning I went and I spun the fan by hand. It had proper resistance and didn't freewheel. I started the car for a moment and fan pulled tons of air through for a few moments before disengaging because it's cold. So I checked under the radiator cap and the water level doesn't cover the tops of the fins, but they were wet. There's no major obstructructions on the AC condensor or in front of the radiator.

any ideas? Any would be appreciated!

I know with mine the water has to be spilling right out of the darn radiator for everything to work properly.

Its an SR motor though, and a Fluidyne radiator.

Just go through the system, and trouble shoot. Check for pressure leaks (the coolant system should sustain around 16psi). Check the thermostat, if your running an electric fan, check the switching mechanism...etc

the stock nissan radiator cap has a pressure cap of about 12-13psi, not 16 psi, the NISMO cap does though.

Sounds like your thermostat got stuck or you have gotten an air bubble into your cooling system.

Have you noticed any kind of slow leak lately? is your coolant reservoir running low? When was the last time your thermo was changed? Coolant system flushed/coolant changed?

i would also entertain checking the weep hole of the water pump

ive seen many folk overheat a car because the water pump was leaking so very slowly, and eventually it became a nice air bubble.

incase you are wondering, to check the weephole, adn thus diagnose a failing waterpump bearing, just runn the car while looking for a small amount of coolant coming out of a little hole on the face on the waterpump housing. I think the hole is physically below the pulley, but i cant recall right now, but check it out, its easy.
