I have a 2009 Rogue AWD fully loaded, low miles (almost 10,000) and am generally pretty happy with it as a commute car to work. Just recently I noticed a strange repetitive on and off low “clunk” sound when I accelerate to approximately 30 to 40 miles. It sounds like something is spinning with the tires but the tires look ok. I don’t think temperature is an issue since I can hear the noise in both cold and warm weather. My last service was November of last year (tire rotation and oil change) and everything checked out ok. I am thinking to bring the car in for a test drive with the technician but want to run it by you guys first to see if anyone else had similar experience or any suggestions. I know this is probably won’t go anywhere but I guess I still need to try it. Thanks.

Do you feel anything in the shifter if you put your hand on it? I had a rubber boot come loose and it was hanging on driveshaft causing noise when driving. The only difference was that it was at any speed.

thanks for your reply - not really though. The sound only appears when I accelerate to 30 to 40 miles. It almost sounds like something is taped to the wheels and spins with it. My problem is that I can not always reproduce the sound. I guess I will just have to give it some time and see what happens.

I can't think of a solid idea of what this could be, but I would think a service tech could locate the source with a thorough inspection even if you aren't able to reproduce the noise at will. If you report it to your service department and have an inspection at the very least you will rule out some critical areas such as brakes and suspension.

Check For anything in the tire pattern also, There could be a rock in the tires.
Does it happen when you run over pot holes?
Could also be a warped brake rotor but, I doubt it.
Check the drive shaft, half shaft, and cv boot.

do you have abnormal tire wear? are all 4 tires equal? did you ever replace 1 or 2 tires?

since we are awd our tires need to match, or be in this order:
F: new(L)-----old(R)

R: old(L)-----new(R)
