Hey guys,

I have an SR20DET. I noticed about 1/4 cup of oil dumping on my garage floor everytime I turn off the engine. I suspected the rear main oil gasket and had it replaced, but it still pukes oil after every cut off. Any ideas? Its def. coming from the rear of the motor, maybe the new seal was installed wrong. I know for sure its not transmission fluid. It def smells like motor oil.

Just to make sure I bought the correct seal, I got one for a 94 Sentra Se-r. I think any sr20 rear main gasket should fit. Is my assumption correct?

That seal off an SR20DE will work. It may be the the turbo oil return tube area thats leaking. If you didnt have a gasket between the turbo and oil outlet that could result in a leak.

There is a plate covering a hole on the bottom front of the transmission that you can take off by removing 2 10mm bolts. If the rear main seal is leaking, that would be the major route it would end up leaking through. You can remove that and feel around the inside for wet oil to further narrow down the location of the leak.

Well, if the oil return line was leaking, it would prob be smoking. And thats not happening. Now that plate you're talking about, is it on the block or on the transmission? If its on the transmission, its not leaking because the oil doesnt smell like transmission fluid.

When the oil line off the turbo leaks it does not smoke, believe me, i've had that leak before. The plate I am talking about is on the bottom front of the transmission, its a little plate with two 10mm bolts, if you open it and the rear main seal is not leaking, nothing should come out. Through this passage you are looking at the back of the flywheel. I may be able to get a picture later.

OK got under the car and spayed that hoe with cleaner and got rid of all oil traces. I found that plate your talking about, you said its on the bottom front of transmission, really its on the lower oil pan facing the front of the motor. But thats not important. I am going to open it up tonite.

After driving it around for 20 mins and came back, I quickly jacked it up to monitor the situation. Immediately oil starts to drip. Now exactly where its coming from is hard to tell, because I believe a little bits drips as I am driving and it gets throw around by the wind. Upon inspecting the outside of transmission housing, no oil is present on the sides, its all originating from the bottom of the motor/transmission.

The little hole on the bottom of the transmission where it meets the motor is where I think its coming from, but the weird part is, the oil comes out black when i just changed my oil 2 days ago. The oil on the dipstick is yellowish clear. I guess the clear oil runs over the crap in the bellhousing and gets polluted.

I checked around the turbo drain area and no leaks were found. Its def. coming from within the flywheel/bellhousing area. So its safe to assume that my 4 day old rear seal is bad or was installed incorrectly. Anybody have any personal experience with installing this seal? Is it really this touchy?

Theres nothing difficult about placing the seal in the proper location. I would just guess that the place you had install the seal didnt actually do it. To install this seal you have to drop the transmission, take off the clutch and then remove the flywheel. I think shops around here call it about a 7 hour job, and at about $60 per hour that puts the labor at around a $400 job for a $20 seal.

Heh, they may have also installed the seal backwards.

Just do it yourself. Do it right, the first time, save 400 hundred bucks.

I dobut they put it in backwards... I've used them before and they do good cheap work. These guys work on imports all day long. They showed me the old one so i know they took it out. Plus, I looked under the car at the bolts and they had been touched, so I know transmission was dropped. They charged me 280 bux for labor. I'm going to take it back and see if I can get them to redo the work.
