Ever since I got my 240 there has been some wierd clunking noise coming from the rear, mostly the passenger side.... The noise is only present when I'm in reverse and disappears if the brakes are applied (at least recently).... And at times there won't even be any noise or sign of anything. This noise has been really frustrating. I don't think that it is my brakes as I just replaced the pads and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with the caliper or the brake system. I'm thinking that it might have something to do with my diff.... It's hard for me to say as to where the noise is exactly located. Any ideas as to what's causing this will be greatly appreciated!

Sometimes in reverse the brake pad can get caught against the rotor and move into an angled position within its seat. This makes a groaning sound which will go away when the brakes are applied because it straightens out the pad in its seat. This is common with worn out rotors but maybe the situation is similar with brand new pads as well. Just a thought... if it is this though, there is nothing to be worried about except for being embarassed when it does it around your friends. Hope this helps.

I could personally care less about the noise... I thought that it seemed to be the pads getting 'caught' but wasn't for sure. I just didn't want anything to be happening that was damaging. I might sometime look into seeing if I could find a way to keep the pads seated better.... hmmm... I'm not too sure if it's the rotors being worn or anything... the rotors are only 2 to 2.5 years old and I've only had to change the pads once since I got the new rotors. Although, I didn't get the rotors turned... I didn't think that they needed it (and I didn't have another vehicle to take the rotors to NAPA to get them turned). I believe that the noise was there even after the rotors and pads were replaced like 2.5 years ago........ anyone encountered this problem and fixed it?
