As long as I've owned my 240 (3 years now) I have had an intermittant noise that comes from the rear of my car when I go in reverse (not just when the car in in reverse, but even when it rolls backward). I have a 1990 with around 175k miles. When I first got the car I had the pads and rotors replaced at a shop. And I just recently (past month) replaced the pads, rotors seemed fine. The noise seems to be a cluncking/grinding noise. It seems to come from the passanger side rear tire. The noise is a little weird on when it occurs too. Sometimes there is no noise at all. Other times I'll be in reverse and there won't be noise until I start to brake. And yet there are other times when it makes the noise until I apply pressure to the brakes! The only thing that I can think of is that the pads are catching or something strange like that...... Thanks in advance for helping me! If you need any more info I should be able to provide it, but I am currently at college and don't have my car with me, so I won't get to actually attempt to fix much until next weekend when I'll be home for Easter. I just want to try to get ideas and possible solutions before I go home so that it might be easier. Thanks again!

check to see if the backing plate is rubbing, also take a look at all the pad and torq member hardware. make sure none of that is rubbing the rotor. the ones in the torq member that the pads slide on sometimes break the little ears off that keep them centered on the torq member.

By the backing plate are you reffering to the heat shield? And by the the torq member does that mean the same as the caliper (or the side of the caliper that directly applies pressure to the pad)? I'm just wanting to make sure that I'm understanding everything that you're saying so that when I'm home at the end of this coming week I'll be able to take a look at it all and hopefully fix the problem. Thanks again for your advice!

The caliper bolts to the slide pins in the torq member. the torq member bolts to the spindle.

The backing plate is the splash shield behind the rotor attached to the spindle.

Thanks again! I'll see what happens this week and hopefully get it all fixed.
