Hi all, so earlier today as I was driving it felt like I momentarily lost all power to the wheels. The engine revved but there was little to no forward movement. But the problem went away shortly after so i figured i was slipping (roads were very slick) on ice or something (stupid).

But then just now when I turn the car on and begin to accelerate there is a strange whirring noise coming from the engine bay somewhere and I will be able to accelerate for about 30 seconds before it feels like I'm in neutral. If I turn the car off for a little bit then turn it back on I'm able to move for another 30 seconds or so before it happens again. Any ideas? It's a 93 twin turbo.

I'm assuming A/T? Sadly, it's most likely your torque converter biting it. Check your fluid level. Very low line pressure can also cause this.

So is this something that would require just the torque converter to be replaced? Or the entire transmission.
Would just replacing the torque converter be a temporary fix at best?

I've been trying to source a 5-Speed for a swap anyway, but finding one for a TT that I don't have to pay half the price of the car for is becoming a harder task than I thought.

I'm really unsure what route to go from here.

It's a band-aid. I had my trans rebuilt for $2000 when reverse and lockup went out and about 6 months later it started losing lockup again. I got ripped off, but didn't have a clue.

I found my 5 speed trans on Craigslist for $200. Just gotta search until you find a good deal.

Thanks for the help Ace2cool. Looks like I'll be pursuing the swap.
And thank you for the tip Ziggy, I completely missed that in his thread.
