I have a 1990 s13 red top sr20det with a greddy fmic and bov with the stock manifold (soon to upgrade)

In first and 2nd gear my car makes a really odd almost like quacking/rattling noise when reving above 4k. This noise gets more intense as the car warms up. It may be paranoia but I also feel like the the turbo/intake inhale sound sounds off as well?

I checked it out and the sound looks like its coming from under the exhaust (or is it turbo?) manifold shield... could it be an exhaust gasket or the turbo gasket?

Only in first or second? Try transmission.

notice any coolant leaks? Check your turbo lines

i had the same problem, it was both a leak in the exhaust, and the heat sheild under and above the catalictic converter. very weird it only happened after 3.5k but that fixed it.

How expensive/what was required to fix your problem... I have a megan racing downpipe with a blitz nur spec cat back... was the exhaust gasket your problem?

no i had the stock exhaust, it was leaking cuz it had a small hole in it. and it didnt cost me anything to rip out the exhaust shields around the cat, just take out the bolts lol...im not sayin its your problem 100% but thats what mine did and i did the above and it worked fine

sounds just like the exhaust. my rb did the exact same thing. it made a rattle noise that i only noticed around 2.0-2.5k rpms. it was annoying.

Man... did things take a turn for the worse. I drove the car home from college yesterday (two hour drive) and since I have gotten back the car just sounds worse and worse.

The noise now sounds like an old chevy pickup truck during acceleration (real deep and puttering). I can hear it through all the gears and its so loud that I can barely hear my bov.

Im pretty sure its not a rod knock (holy crap I hope not)and im pretty sure its not the turbo cause my boost gauge is showing full boost.

What the hell?

this sound is audible through every gear at any rpm as long as i'm accelerating. the car doesn't seem to have any power loss, and the sound seems to be coming from somewhere between the downpipe and the exhaust manifold. any clue to what this may be? i will post a video of the sound if i can figure out how to.thanks.
