I got the following email from someone visiting my J30 web page. I have no idea what could be causing this.

Have any of you hear of this before?

Here's the problem:

My beautiful 1995 J30T won#39;t crank. It drove home from the lady I bought it from fine, it has a brand new battery, but suddenly all that happens is the headlights flash as though the hazard lights are on, but that's not it. I have it at a shop, and the mechanic tells me that it's probably a theft deterrent system of some kind, but he has no idea how to turn it off. The lady I bought it from is out of town -- I called her, but thought I'd try you again. Thanks

Carlos

Does the "shop" have a Consult?

I'm willing to bet they don't have a consult. That's a good point, though. Sounds like it may be mom-n-pop shop.

I just haven't heard of the car not turning over and the headlights just blinking on and off.

Definately sounds like the anti-theft module. For some reason the horn isn't honking, but the starter kill and headlights flashing are definately from the factory anti-theft system. If I was him, I'd try to find the theft deterrent module and disconnect it. Or try disconnecting the battery for a while and see what happens. I've heard of a bad hood switch causing the alarm to activate when it shouldn't. It could also be bad sensor on the door locks, etc. I assume they've tried this, but I'd close everything and then unlock the door with the key... that's the way it's supposed to disarm.

I'd recommend that this guy get on over to NICO - seems like a nice influx of new J30 owners lately!

Unhooking the theft deterrent system (by taking out the fuse or unplugging it) wont allow the car to start...... If it was that easy, why wouldnt anyone just pull the fuse???

No guarantees but here are a couple of things to try.

Use the key in the lock to activate/deactivate the anti theft system.

Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote.

Sometimes the J can suffer from a persnickity door latch.

Hey guys, I wanted to post a follow-up. Using the key to lock and unlock the car did the trick.

The mechanic is speculating that the problem was caused by the installation of the new battery and things needed to be reset.

Good call. I didn't know that. I'll have to keep it in mind. May even add it to the web page.
