i just finished swapping ka's. went from de to de and im now trying to get it running correctly and i have these issues that i cant figure out.

number 1: the timing. i have everything set according to the FSM. piston 1 is at TDC on the compression stroke and the dizzy is lined up with #1 correctly. when i start it, it runs but sounds like a lawnmower. then dies when i give it gas. i have to advance it all the way to get it to run.

number 2: the exhaust temp. i had it running for 20 seconds and the exhaust header got incredibly hot. to the point where i dripped some water on it and it evaporated immediately. like i said, it was only running for 20 seconds.

number 3: the interior electronics. nothing works. cluster lights, interior lights, blower motor, headlights wont go up, wipers. nothing. it sounds like i blew the 75a fuse, but everything is how it should be on the alt. the plastic insulator is there and everything. heres where it gets weird. everything turns on the second i depress the gas pedal. watch.

i dont know what to do for any of them. ive checked all the grounds and fuses. im gonna replace the 75a fuse just because. but other than that, i have no idea. :frown:

Not sure about the electrical issue, but I would double check your main grounds and cluster connections. If you can get ahold of a decent scanner, I would scan it just for good measure to see what the sensors are reading. A good scanner could also tell you where your timing is. But like Razi said, I also think you are way lean and shouldn't run it long that way. Think pre-detonation and melted stuff, not good. If you dont have a timing light, pull the distributor and move it a tooth so you have some range to adjust it. Once you get her to where she sounds like a car again you can move it one way or the other to find the smooth spot. You may be off a few degrees but at least it would be safe to drive. If you can get a timing light, its a ten minute job basically. If you were a little closer I would help you out. Hope this helps you bud.

how can i make it so its not running lean? is that done thru the timing?
but i moved it a tooth advanced, and that definitely helped. it runs much better. ill have to get hold of a timing light to get it right.

Is all your fuel stuff okay?
A stuffed fuel filter or messed up FPR can make your car run lean. See if you can borrow a fuel pressure gauge for a day.

sounds like you could also be in the neighborhood of some swapped connectors. I had this issue in the R33 when I got it and it was causing all sorts of issues. I would recheck wiring, then get into the basic checks. fuel pressure, start over again with timing. Maybe swap fuel rails over in case you got a serious injector issue.

Check the firing order, timing, and replace that ALT fuse if you haven't already. It might "look like it's good" , could be fried. Go over Main power harness and grounds.

Get a timing light and get the timing set correctly then report back. Excessively retarded timing and running rich(like during a cold start up) can produce a very large amount of heat in the exhaust.

i fixed the electrical issue. turns out the 75a somehow popped. i think the ground cable may have made contact with the housing cause it was on at a weird angle. but what i dont get is why they would all come on under throttle.

injectors should be good. brand new o-rings and insulators. plus they are all working, but they are old. so im not ruling that out.
the rail might be an issue tho. i did notice that all the plugs are black too.

now this is where im at

but motor is running cool and not ridiculously hot.
its seems like a MAF issue, correct? wasnt doing it the other day. but i did take the maf off to inspect it last night.

this is my first time doing something this major, so excuse my noob questions. greatly appreciate the help tho
also thanks for moving this to the right section. totally forgot we had to post this kind of stuff in here now :chuckle:

Try running it with the maf not plugged in? It will throw it in safe mode but will run fine till like 2500-3000rmp. If it runs better with maf unplugged then you prob have a maf issue. My Z31 wouldn't really run set to correct timing. I ended up just moving the distributer a couple teeth at a time till it would start then kept adjusting it till it ran right. Timing marks are way off on the stock pulley of my car somehow? It was like that when I got it.

when i unplugged the maf, it did seem to run better. it would wan to die when i plugged the maf back in too. i also tried cleaning it and it still ran the same.

so basically the maf is bad then, correct? cause it was totally fine before i swapped the motor.
