A couple weeks ago, I cranked the the truck up and it started running like total crap. Motor was shaking violently, started making a banging sound and pouring transmission fluid. I figured that the front transmission seal was shot. I looked under at the flexplate and saw that the T/Q bolts had loosened and wallowed the holes about and inch wide. I've been wanting to swap it to a 5sp. for quite a while so this was a good excuse to persue the idea.
Went yesterday kickin' around the junkyard and found a whole truck minus radiator and front bumper for $250. I couldn't turn the motor by hand but the transmission shifted fine and clutch felt good. Got home stuck a battery on it a dumped gas in the carb, it runs! :woot:
Well today I pulled the motor and transmission out of my truck and the bellhousing is busted and cracked all to hell :wtf2: I just did an oil change a few days before the fiasco but can't remember if I drove it after that. I figured I'd save the new oil and filter. As the new motors oil is pitch black. I pulled the filter and it was dry, another :wtf2: I drained the oil and it smelled gassy, yet another :wtf2:
I'll tear into it when I get time and let y'all know what I find. But tomorrow I'll be working on getting the new to me package in and running. :dblthumb:
If I get as much done tomorrow as I did today, it ought to be close to finished.

Well... lots of strange stuff there man, LOL. I can tell you that the gassy smelling oil means you're running way too rich.

Yea, probably. It was a tired old motor my buddy gave to me after he put a v6 in his. It was mainly a garbage runner (about 3 miles every other week or so)for a couple years. Only recently I started using it for a DD as my dakota bit the dust(transmission also). Well it's running pretty good now except for a stumble every now and then on accel. I think it's the old carb, Lord knows how long it's been since it's had any gas in it. I don't want to use my old carb because it got $hitty mpg's at best. J/Y owner had no clue about the motor 'cept that it's been out there "quite a while". Anyways, the 5sp,I'm lovin the hell out of it. :woot: Got the straight bumper and grill on, looks ALOT better than the old wrinkled up POS that was on there.

Sounds like you've made quite a bit of progress. Thro up some pix for us to see. I plan on posting a Hitachi carb rebuild thread this summer. Right now I'm working on a new rotor/caliper rebuild and brake hose change thread. :woot:

Well, she ain't a garage queen by any means. The clear coat is peeling like crazy and the roof is a solid sheet of surface rust. Keep in mind that it was my workhorse for the last 6-7 years and I kinda negleted the cosmetics. Now that I'm DD it, I'm going to get on dressing it up. I kinda hate to fix it up real nice, 'cause the way it is, if I bump or bruise it a little it don't really hurt that bad. I'll get some pics up soon, when I get some new batteries for the cam. Dunno why but it eats the hell out of batteries. "Knock on wood", she's still running strong. Oh, and it's that good ol' turd brown BTW...
Here's a shot if it about 3 1/2 years ago. The bumper was well "used up" since then.

I wish the clearcoat would just go ahead and fall off. Then I could Krylon the hell out of it :naughty: Thinkin' about making a brushguard/pushbar for it. Any ideas? I like to buy one but I just started my new/old job last week, so it will be a l'il while before I have the mad money to put on it. :squint:
