Hi:

I have being posting here and there on Nico forums about my engine noise. I guess I should summarize on my problems and if possible, please help me with this.

1) I have replaced (a couple weeks ago) timing belt, Water pump, all idler pulleys, all belts, VTC srping and O-ring. Timing belt lined up properly with all 5 sprockets. The noise was not ther before timing belt replacement.

2) The noise only occurs when the transmission is in D, 1, 2, 3, R. In other words, there is no noise AT ALL when transmission is in P and N.

3) This is the strangest thing. The noise ONLY comes from the passenger side of the engine. It is definitely from the engine. Not timing cover, not alternator, not PS pump.

4) The noise sounds like if you are hitting an empty 4-gallon water barrel. The noise is deep and in sync with CAM position.

I am highly suspecting that there is something wrong with the VTC system (solenoid, or sprocket) becasue a) the noise comes from one side of the engine and b) the noise is only there when trans is in D and R. Any tips will be appreciated.

OCI = Oil Change Interval? It has been not good and ranging from 4 months to almost an year between oil changes.

Please see Q45Tech's response at the bottom of your other thread. My only other suggestion would be to get a mechanic's stethoscope like this to help you narrow the location.

If a stethascope is not handy a long srewdriver with your ear to the plastic handle may suffice. Rather easy to isolate. A wooden handle will work but deadens the sound greatly.

Some really really old school stuff.
