Ok I have an '89 fastback with an auto transmission.

When I first got the car the exhaust manifold was cracked which was causing the O2 sensor to trip out and I also had some leaky fuel lines.

I took it to the local mechanic and got the fuel lines fixed as well as a new fuel filter...I also got the manifold replaced.

After they replaced the manifold they discovered another "minor" leak..after the manifold but before the cat. I still haven't got that fixed yet though.

So far the car has been running fine save for the exhaust leak sound.

Today...I was on the freeway coming home...there was traffic so I was only doing about 40mph and the car suddenly lost power and started to die down...I tried giving it more throttle and the car revved up for a second and then shut off completely ..while I was moving..

I turned the key and shut it off then turned it back on but it just kept shutting down again...at this point Im freaking out cause Im no where close to the shoulder and Im in MAJOR traffic.

It wasn't overheating, the check engine light didn't come on, and the battery light didn't come on either..it just kept shutting off everytime I tried to start it.

Eventually it stayed on and I was able to make it the rest of the way home without any problems but I was pretty much at a crawl for the whole way home because of traffic.

I really dont want to take the car back on the freeway again if its going to give me another surprize like that...

Does anyone have any idea what could have caused the car to lose power and shut down like that?

Where do I start?

Check the fuel pressure. Then onto the fuel pump, with the key in the last position before it actually starts. Do you hear the fuel pump whirl up? Next check over your spark plugs. What's the tip looking like?

Im not exactly sure how to check the fuel pressure.

Although I did listen for the fuel pump and it sounded ok.

I just replaced the spark plugs like 3 months ago so Im not sure if they would be bad already but I'll check those next.
