This is my first post to these forums so I hope this thread is in the correct place. Here's the problem.

I have a '93 240SX convertible with automatic transmission. For the past several months the transmission does not shift from 3rd to 4th gear or, sometimes into over drive. What's strange is that the problem occurs sporatically and not all the time. It seems that it is possibly heat related as I rarely have the problem until the engine warms up. In other words it shifts fine while the engine is cool to warm but does not want to shift after the engine reaches the normal operating range.

To cloud things further, I've found that when it fails to shift correctly I can cut the car off and restart it and it will shift correctly for a bit. Needless to say this gets quite frustrating and I have had my share of one fingered solutes!!!

The transmission has been serviced and the shop said that nothing appeared to be out of the norm as far as a clogged transmission filter or shavings in the pan.

By the way the car has about 150K miles on it so I guess it's about due for some major overhaul.

Any insight as to the possible problem(s) is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Kilowatt

Not sure exactly what your problem is or if this will pertain to it but... I once had a car that after it had ran for a while wouldn't want to shift (mainly in high gears, as u stated) and after it sat for awhile it would be ok until finally it just wouldn't start at all. The problem ended up being the fuel line coming right off the tank (rubber)...the damned thing would suck da fuel through it and collapse a bit and after a while it wouldn't shift up b/c it couldn't get the fuel it needed. Eventually the line would completely collapse and i would have to take the fuel line off of it and blow air down it to get it back to normal. It continually did this cuz it was a pain in my ***, but the point is...maybe its not ur transmission at all like the mechanic said but maybe you just aren't getting enough fuel or another problem such as this that would allow you to shift into higher gears. Just a guess man and hopefully it'll lead ya in the right direction.

sounds like your front transmission pump is overheating and shutting off...

Thanks Aries,

Would this be something that I could tackle or should I just have the transmission rebuilt? I assume that the pump is internal to the transmission?

Thanks again,

I have the same sort of problem with my At except after runnign for a while and only sometimes it won't shift out of 1st it will be stuck so I took it to a shop and they said my ecu had an error on it that has somethign to do with the shift solenoids so he recomended to get the solenoids changed out I haven't got it repaired yet but hopefully soon. Hey aries any idea if this theory sounds right???

240canuck, if the shift solonoids are not being given the command to change due to an ECU error, or are simply not responding to the ECU's command to change, then the transmission is best to be rebuilt. Kits can be ordered to do it yourself complete with dirrections for about $120 or you can pay about $400 to have a professional do it and give you a warrantee on it.

Kilowatt1, the front pump is something that is best done by a transmission shop. The pump is fragile, and can be extremely tempermental about wanting to come out and go back into place.
