storing an engine for a year

Will it need any maintainance afterwards? I figured that if stored properly, it shouldn't have any problems.

just make sure all fluids are drained from the engine and disconnect the battery (this is assuming the engine is in a car).

what happens when you dont drain all the fluids from the engine/car?something really bad? or is it just safe to do it that way?

You do not want to drain all fluids before storing the car. You actually want to make sure everything is topped off. Leaving the fluids in the car will prevent corrosion.

Personally I would even think about switching to a marine oil right before storage. They have addatives to help impede corrosion.

There is also a thing called fogging spray. It is an aerosol can that is designed to spray into the cylinders to impede corrosion. You should be able to find it at any marina as it is commonly used on marine engines. Adding oil to the cylinders should do the same thing, but it might run off over time.
